Local Guide Posting as a Business

Hello community, I noticed a business using a local guide account and sadly 1-star rated clearly what is a competitor’s business.

It sounds like the protocol is to report here (although it was unclear as to which thread/group to post…how-to?) and then to tag a moderator, soooo @GeorgesHR , tag, you’re it! :slight_smile:

Did I do this correctly? Please alter my post if I did something incorrect. Thank you!

Hi @DustinSteller this is a clear example of violation of reviews guidelines. The review should be reported using the standard tools by the business owner, if you can contact him.

@DustinSteller Great question!

@LucioV That makes sense - do you know offhand what the policy is for self-review? For instance, if someone set up a GMB, and were also a Google user or Local Guide, are they expressly forbidden from posting a 5-star review of themselves? And if so, should we attempt to police/report those, as well, in addition to the nerfing-competitors 1-star reviews?

Apologies if that is written somewhere - I searched briefly and didn’t find anything conclusive.

@kmichaelcook sometimes could happen to give out a self 5 stars. It’s easy, Google Maps continue to propose to rate own place… but I think that there is no particular guideline that don’t allow apart the conflict of interest rule. But I think that should be blocked by design!

Conflict of Interest

Maps user contributed content is most valuable when it is honest and unbiased. Examples of disallowed practices include, but are not limited to:

@LucioV Aha! Great response - that makes sense, but to my mind, it seems like a gray area.

i would definitely report someone if I saw them giving 1-star reviews to competitors, but based on this documentation, I would not feel comfortable reporting someone for giving themselves 5-stars. It seems like without all the information, I could wind up doing more harm than good.

Thank you for the response. :slight_smile: That would be a conflict of interest, correct?

Yes, of course. It’s a conflict of interest.

But the point is that own business pop out in contributions page every moment, and it’s easy to make this error without any real intention to cheat.
