Local festival

Hi everyone,

This is Charu, local guide from Aurangabad, India. Today we are celebrating our new year, according to Hindu calendar. This day is first day of month Chaitra. It is called Gudhi Padwa.

Health dose for year

We hoist an arrangement called Gudhi.

Gudhi

Rangoli at doorstep

We use Neem leaves, mango leaves, sugar garland and gold along with new saree and copper pot, tied together on a bamboo stick.

Neem, flowers, mango leaves and sugar garland

This is hoisted outside the household ,typically to the right ,or through a window or terrace so that it is visible to everyone . Significances attended to raising a Gudhi are :-

  • Gudhi is believed toward off evil , invite prosperity and good luck into the house.

  • It symbolises the victory of King Shalivahana.

Families prepare a special dish with bitter neem flowers, and sweet jaggery, sour tamarind , astringent Dhania seeds. We believe that eating this today, keeps all illnesses away.
