Let me preface this by saying I have never been to Maine. Maine has never really been on my radar. The one time I experienced something from Maine was when I met a dear friend from there who always pronounced lobster as ‘lobstah’ and had an infectious laugh and personality. Also, 4 years ago I was able to sample a famous lobster roll at a food truck rodeo in North Carolina.
Lobster Rolls
These things were massive hunks of meat on delicious buns and served with the simplest seasoning and warm butter. The line for the food truck was 30 minutes long and I gladly sat in line waiting my turn to take down a roll and some tasty tater tots. Now, I am dying to visit the state and try some local lobster dishes and lobster rolls from the source.
Wacky Maine Finds
While looking into Maine I discovered, like @Kwiksatik and @Denise_Barlock that Maine is a very interesting place. A few nuggets of information I found interesting about Maine.
- Maine has 3,166 off-shore islands
- Maine has over 6,000 lakes and ponds
- Maine produces 90% of the USA’s toothpick supply
- Maine’s coastline has so many deep harbors it could provide anchorage for all the Navy fleets in the world
- Maine loves lobsters. The University of Maine even has its own Lobster Institute, dedicated to learning more about the animals
Also, if you love visiting interesting and off-the-wall places, Maine has you covered
- International Cryptozoology Museum - Tiny museum with exploring the mystery of Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, mermaids & more
- The Desert of Maine - A tiny desert in one of the greenest states in the United States. Yup, you heard me right, no dry humor from me
- Eartha - Found in a three-story glass gallery at the former DeLorme Headquarters (later acquired by Garmin), is the world’s largest rotating/revolving globe. Take this museum for a spin
- Wild Blueberry Land - A delightful theme park dedicated to the official fruit of Maine. Buy some sweet treats and you won’t leave blue
