Library Tour - Prime Ministers’ Museum Library

Hello Friends,

Welcome to my second post in this series of Library Tour. As I mentioned in my first post of this series,

“According to my way of thinking, Library is one place where we can spend quality time with great books. It is a place where we can entertain and educate ourselves by reading along with a great mix of friends in a peaceful environment”.

Let me take you to the research and reference library this time which is primarily established for the research scholars. Yes, I am talking about ‘The Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library’.

The Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library is established as a research Library on the Social Sciences. Earlier it was known as Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.

Library building of Pradhanmantri Sanghrahalaya is a state of art building. This has the collection of a range of books on various topics along with the newspapers, journals, photographs and manuscripts. This Library is specialized for the specific research and reference centre on pre and post ‘Independent India’ as I could captured while discussing it through some of the scholars there.

This library is not open for everyone. Only members are allowed to go inside the reading hall and have access to the available resources. Membership of the library is available for a selected categories of Research Scholars who are mainly working for Humanities and Social Sciences. The membership fee is very nominal for the bona-fide members. Since the Library is a reference library, members can refer the resources inside the library but these resources can’t be issued out.

Drinking water and eatables are not allowed inside the reading hall. Even the mobile phones are not allowed inside the library. These belongings can be kept in the lockers available at the reception on payment basis.

On a special permission from the reception staff, I took a walk outside the reading hall inside the library premises and captured some of the beautiful moments through my lenses.

Just beside this library there is a small canteen where one can have the refreshments and good tea. I spent some time here and had tea with biscuits. There is a beautiful garden of seasonal flowers alongside this library. Please enjoy a glimpse of that.

There is another small library inside Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya (Prime Minister Museum) premises, where there is a collection of Prime Ministers’ Books known as ‘Prime Ministers Book Collection’. Access to this library and available resources is free for all. I had access to all PMs (as on date) books to glance through. This requires a good time to stay and explore these books. Photography inside this library is prohibited.

I visited here on weekdays and hence it was very comfortable for me to explore the resources.

Some important and helpful pointers and tips for the visitors:

1. Visit Preference: Library is open from Monday to Friday from 9.00 AM to 8.00 PM and on Saturday from 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM. Closed on Sunday and Public holidays.

This looks like an enriching experience @Kumaarsantosh !
The Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Museum Library seems to offer a deep dive into history and leadership through its collection.

The way you’ve captured the essence of the tour in your post makes it feel like a must-visit for history enthusiasts.

I want to know:

  1. Were there any particular artifacts or books that stood out to you during the visit?
  2. Also, do they offer guided tours or interactive sessions for visitors?

Thanks for sharing this insightful glimpse into such a significant place!

Yes, I remember the previous post on the library @Kumaarsantosh
and now it is turning out to be a unique and amazing series.

I am tempted to jump in, but let’s admire the greatness and the beauty of this new library that you have captured wonderfully in your lens :+1:

I loved the close-up shots of the flowers and also the other parts of the library.

I never heard about this library living in Delhi, but now I know :handshake:

The detailed information, listed meticulously is going to be immensely helpful, kind of a template on how to share complete information of a useful place. Greatly appreciate it.

Hi @KetanChhaniyara,

Thank you so much for going through in detail and posing the insightful question. I loved the way you have structured your comments.

The Prime Minister Museum properly known as ‘Pradhanmantri Sanghrahalaya’ itself has two buildings known for museums. For the newly inaugrated museum all the latest facilities are available including taking pictures with the Prime Ministers (Don’t ask how here, just to keep the curiosity on😀), virtual Helicopter tour etc. I shall be covering those details in my another series on Museum Tour.

In this post of mine the coverage is largely on the Libraries which are inside PM Museum premises. It was a day long tour for me but I did spend good time for Libraries visit as well. As I have mentioned here, it was not open for everyone and hence could not get an opportunity to look at the available resources.

Yes, while visiting here  as I have mentioned I did get a chance to glance through the books.

In particular I loved flipping through the books on Shri Gulzarilal Nanda (Second Prime Minister of India) and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri (Third Prime Minister of India).

I fully agree with you saying,

Hope I did some justice to your ask.

Thank you so much @TusharSuradkar for studying the post deeply and your compliments.

Such words coming from you who himself is a Master in writing meticulously in a great detail means a lot for me.

You are absolutely right :+1: saying this as most of us visit this place because of the Museum. Undoubtedly, museum has its own significance and PM Museum is one of the best state of art Museums but somewhere I read it’s full name as The Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library and that triggered the search of Library. Although, being a non member I did not get the full access of this main library but it was satisfactorily good to know as much I could.

PM Book Collection is relatively a small library but I liked the way it is organized to depict the working era of all Indian PMs till date with their achievements and contributions to the country and the world.

Glad that you liked my lens and it’s output.:grinning:

Once again I am thankful to you and have no words to express my gratitude for the way you support the community and its members.

That’s an incredible place to explore. Thank you for an extremely descriptive post on this library and the museum in general. Being an avid reader , i would love to read the books written by all the PMs of India. Though I visited the museum a few years ago, i wasn’t aware of both the libraries. Thank you for sharing @Kumaarsantosh

That’s great @Ssiddharth2000. Then this place is for you. You must visit and surely you will enjoy reading these books. Prime Minister Book Collection building is just adjacent to the PM Museum. In-fact both buildings share a common wall.
