#LGCTM Tips & Tricks: Reopen places

Hi all,

In the Local Guides Clean The Map-series we now have a great opportunity as temporary COVID-closures need to be reversed on Google Maps.

Here all restaurants, shops, and shopping centers have reopened and many of them are still marked as temporary closed. Not all business owners have claimed their listings and many don’t check their listings regularly.

So there are a lot of much-needed edits waiting for us as the COVID restrictions get lifted.

Suggest an edit and select “Reopen”.

Also, you may want to fix the description:

In my neighborhood, I can scan the listings without even opening the places pages since words like “Takeout” are listed directly on the map. They need to have the dine-in option checked again.

You can’t do this on Desktop, but on Android and IOS-devices you select the tab About

and then select Describe this place to toggle the Dine-in option ON again. So this is not done by the usual Suggest an edit routine.

I don’t know if such improvements of the description result in points. Please share, if you know this.

Cheers

Excellent piece of advice @MortenCopenhagen and good to know that the changing of the ‘Dine in’ option is now working (it was not a while ago).

Thx for sharing!

Thanks @MortenCopenhagen for the tips.

I have just tried but apparently, it hasn’t worked for me. This is propably due to the fact that the owner need to validate on Google My Business.

Have a nice day

Hi @Julien44

Thanks for your remark. I went back to check some of the Dine-in markings I made yesterday. And they are still not visible on the map. So you and @JanVanHaver are right that this is not really working (yet).

Would @sonnyNg care to share an update on this? Is this a bug and something the team is working to fix?

Cheers

A couple of weeks ago, we were not able to update the Dine in feature in that About section at all, so there is definitely progress. But having this confirmed in GMB would indeed also make sense @MortenCopenhagen @Julien44

As per the current situation, description matters the most as the customer wants to know whether the business is allowing dine-in, takeaway, or not.

I do not see any point in updating the description of any business. Description can be found in the about section of any business, it may not be visible on the homepage of any listing/business.

Hi @deepakjhic

I agree with your first paragraph. But the second makes no sense to me.

Is your local situation so that no shops are open?

What do you mean by homepage? Do you mean the places’ pages on Google Maps?

The Dine-in and Takeout data are displayed prominently directly on the map as shown below.

The mention of Takeout only indirectly means that Dine-in is not available. Which in is not correct in this example.

So I see ample reason to update the description under About.

Please share what you mean by “I do not see any point in updating the description of any business.”

All the best

Morten

As per the latest reply,

Please share what you mean by “I do not see any point in updating the description of any business.”

Wasn’t I able to understand you properly in this?

  • It seems I was unable to clarify the description of any business. Great to see that takeout on that Mormors business. When this business offer Dine-in and Takeout together, will it show both words?

When I said homepage then it means after clicking on a business what we see in the maps. You were able to understand that in your below text.

to update the description under About.

@deepakjhic

When I was taught English the sentence

“I do not see any point in updating the description of any business.”

meant

“I do not see any reason to update the description of any business.”

Maybe you meant

“I don’t think we get any points for updating the description of any business.”

It could easily be that wording is used and understood differently across cultures.

I’m not sure. My best guess is that Takeout will be replaced with the type of restaurant like Thai or Vegetarian.

I do see other places nearby listed with both: Takeout * Delivery directly on the map. My quick search did not find any places with Takeout * Dine-in mentioned directly on the map.

Saludos.

Hi @SilvyC

It sounds like a nice idea to organize a virtual meet-up on reopenings and flagging irrelevant photos.

But with the differences in Covid restrictions it might be a good idea to focus the meet-up on places with similar covid restriction levels.

@MortenCopenhagen , I have tried to make edits in this section. I do not see the results yet. It is likely due to the fact that most of the businesses are claimed. The message after suggesting changes doesn’t show points. And after your question I decided to check it with my general points (I didn’t pay much attention to it as it’s not about points you know) - they haven’t changed after another edit of dine-in. I’ll keep an eye on those places and edits. It’s a pity they are not shown in the edits history - that would make it easier.

And I’m going to suggest more edits.

Thanks, @YuliiaZa

I have tested updating the description for Dine-in on unclaimed businesses also. And it is no better, so I don’t think being claimed is the problem.
