#LGCTM Tips & Tricks: Map Marker Icons

Although the main focus of the Local Guides Clean The Map (#LGCTM) project is on removing places that should not be on the map, there is also work to be done in correcting errors on places that need to remain on the map. This #LGCTM tip will help you find some of those.

The exact position on the map for a so-called Point of Interest (POI) is shown by the map marker, the symbol which is round at the top and pointed at the bottom, with a white dot or an icon inside. Those map markers look different for certain POIs, and what you can come across from time to time is a mismatch between the type of map marker and the information in the name of the place. Take the screen capture at the top of this post: the name clearly indicates it is a dentist (‘tandarts’ is the Dutch word for dentist), but the map marker used for it shows a fork and knife - the type of icon used for restaurants. OK, I admit there can be situations at that place when there is cutting into meat (well, flesh I should really say here), but that definitely does not make it into a restaurant. So in this case, a change of category is what needs to be done.

Or check the example below. The word ‘Apotheek’ is the Dutch word for pharmacy, so that POI should have the red ‘pharmacy’ map marker, not the grey generic one. (If you want to find out more about the various types of map markers, there is an episode of the LetsGuide Podcast on map markers that you can listen to).

Happy guiding & happy cleaning!

Hi @JanVanHaver

Nice tip. Thanks.

Do you know where we can find a list of the specialized pins currently in use?

No @MortenCopenhagen I have not found such a list yet. I guess the community is waiting for a local guide to compile such a list and then share it here on Connect

The best thing I can offer for now is the transcription of the relevant section in the podcast episode (from 11:50 onwards) which contains the overview I had compiled for the episode.

Interesting article, thank you @JanVanHaver for sharing.

I have listened to your letsguide podcasts. All the episodes are full of knowledge. The podcasts helped me a lot. On one occasion you have said that if there needs to be multiple edits in a single point of interest, go for a single edit one by one, don’t do all the edits at once. It was quite helpful for me. Also, I have learned that to check facts we can click a single factor for instance : existence, category etc… I have checked the categories of hundreds of POIs. Thank you for such a valuable efforts.

I think I found a list explaining the colors and most of the icons used on Map Markers/pins:

https://www.blog.google/products/maps/google-maps-gets-new-look/

It is from 2018, so maybe it’s a bit outdated.

Cheers

Nice series @DeepayanS . I also often focus on specific categories and then find one after the other, it’s a good approach.
