#LGCTM Tip: Questions & Answers

Adding to the already great long lists of things you can do the help @JanVanHaver his efforts with Local Guides Clean The Map, here is an area that is cluttered with information that is not (longer) relevant or not correct and requires attention.

Tip #1 - Popular Categories
Marketing research by “Get Five Stars” found that 25 percent of locations on Google Maps had questions. But the majority of questions are made for certain categories. These are: casual restaurants - car dealers - dentists - self-storage companies - chiropractors - dentists - employment agencies - insurance agents.

It was also found that 90 percent of large retail stores (so-called big-box stores) had questions.

Tip #2 - Cinemas have lots of outdated questions
It is my experience that cinemas are a great category to look for outdated questions. Simply flag the question, the answers will go with.

Tip #3 - Don’t miss the “more answers” that are hidden
As you can tell from the screenshot of the Odeon cinema, Google does not automatically list all answers to a certain question. Keep an eye out of the clickable more answers link.

Tip #4 - On Desktop Use Google Search

You may find that the Q&A does not show up on Google Maps, they do however on the info-card that shows up in Google Search. There you find the same Q&A contributions that you find inside your mobile device Google Maps app.

The good news is, that flagging Questions or Answers is extremely easy and fast. The sad news is that we, as Local Guides, don’t earn points.

The following Idea by @NABILazeez about earning points for reporting spam and the post by @Mikemick about earning points for flagging photos are somewhat related. Feel free to support these ideas or add your own.

Happy Cleaning Mapping!

Interesting @JeroenM , I had never considered doing that - and it is indeed quite easy to find irrelevant ones.

On the topic of points for local guides: you indeed don’t get point for flagging those questions, but LGs that gave answers to those questions did get 3 points when providing an answer (that are sometimes rubbish, but at other times well meant). So I wonder what will happen with those points when the questions are removed?

@NABILazeez I have been told that even closed ideas are still potentially “in the picture” when Local Guides keep voting for them and add to the debate.

@JanVanHaver , the points was completely not on my mind, but to be fair to those Local Guides that answer questions that are no longer relevant but still give away the solutions for similar issues, one may decide to leave those.

For example, with the cinemas, many people seem o ask is a certain movie being screened on a certain date. The moment that movie is no longer in cinemas, the question and answer become obsolete. However, when an LG answers the questions and writes something along the lines “different movies play on different days at different times across the year. Best to check the website where they publish the schedule/ program”. You could at least leave one of them as a guide for others that are about to ask the same question.

When Local Guides find their silly answers removed (like “no idea, I don’t know…”) and thus lose points when you remove them, they may stop doing so and prevent an unclean map.

Although flagging these Questions or Answers is indeed very easy and fast, the pain is in deleting all the emails you get from Google thanking you for reporting abuse…

@JanVanHaver I have a problem. The address I live at is not shown at the correct spot on the map (about 500 meter out of place). That means food delivery, friends and so on can’t find my home. I have used all the functions Google have to change it, but I get no help. Can you help me? The address is “Kolonnvägen 2, Solna” (Sweden). The correct place, where it should be situated on the map, is at almost the same spot as “Bilia Haga Norra Volvo” and I can find a “2” there if I zoom in. But the old Kolonnvägen 2 has to be deleted, because it is wrong. Thank you!

Did they change the numbering of the entire street @JohanAx ? In that case you will not be the only one facing those problems. Anyway, I am well aware of the frustration that can be caused if your address is on the iwrong location on Google Maps, because anyone delivering packages or pizzas is guaranteed to use Google Maps for navigation. And in fact I have been able to solve some similar issues for other people.

With the info you provided, I was able to give it a go to move the pin. That edit is now “Pending” in my list, which means it was not rejected by the algorithm that checks all submitted edits. Now we’ll have to see if it gets approved - but that can take days or even weeks. I will try to keep you updated if I notice the edit status has changed.

What you can also try: reach out to your local authority and ask them to sign up for the Google Maps Content Partner program. That is an easy way for official authorities to provide Google with updates to the map (e.g. new house numbers). They can sign up via this link (https://contentpartners.maps.google.com/) - I have been told by some local authorties in Belgium that it is quite an easy process.
