Let's use your native language! We are "Local" Guides. =母国語で投稿しましょう=

(US, Seattle Boeing Factory Tour @YasumiKikuchi )

We are a “guide of local”.
An international group that contributes to those who speak in your native language.

Do you think you must use English with Local Guides Connect? I once thought so.
Because …

  1. I thought that page views would increase.
  2. I thought it would be easy to be invited to Google perk, such as Connect Live.
  3. Googlers interact positively.
  4. All active Local Guides and Moderators use English.
  5. I thought I wouldn’t be intelligent without English.

But are these true?
Are we expected to be competent as an international business person? No not. In fact, the Connect Team would have recommended the use of their native language. And we have Google Translate. No problems occur. But we are hesitant to use our native language for these reasons.

What percentage of all Google Map contributors use English? In other words, is Local Guide Connect open enough to contributors around the world? We release all the elements of closure. Naturally, guides who want to have a smooth international exchange in English should use English actively. What is important is the realization of language barrier-free in Connect.

In fact, if a Japanese word containing a plurality of complex meanings is converted to English as it is, more than half of the included meanings will be lost. Translating into short English makes it more difficult to fully explain the culture. The same goes for other native languages.

Let’s lead your native language with me! If you agree, please send us a Likes and comment in this post. Because this page stands out.
Welcome your native language!

Hi @YasumiKikuchi - There’s no requirement to use English to write a Local Guides Connect post.

If you glance through some of the boards, you’ll find many posts are written in languages other than English, and they’re completely fine. You can use the translation plugin that’s available on every post, then reply using a language you’re comfortable with. That way we can communicate with each other even though we don’t use the same language.

Hello @iyudhi , You’re right.
However, in practice, many guides in Japan either try to use English or give up posting. Because we cannot see those guides, it is difficult to know the real numbers. Not everything works with a policy. I am paying attention to the guide who gives up on Connect because it is difficult. Therefore, I think there will be more need to promote the use of native languages than ever before. We need a true native language leader.

Since I started I used English most of the time for the very same reason. However, now I leave abroad in a English speaking country. What would you do in this case?

Hi @Cristina_S ,
If you want to use English, definitely use English. Similarly, guides who do not want to use, should not use.
What I’m pointing out is that, despite the native language being recommended, they write in English they don’t want to use, or they think too difficult to post and give up. We hope to resolve these with our cooperation and make it easy for all guides to use Connect.

Wah, mantap, mantap.

Yes, I’m agree with you, @YasumiKikuchi -san. Let’s use our native language more often while writing on Connect, since there’s Google Translate toggle available.

By doing this, Connect could be more colorful, inclusive, encourage people to write on their own beautiful language.

Eventhough sometimes Google cannot translate 100 percent correct about what we’ve write. Lol. But that’s fine. We could explain it more later if someone is feels confused. Lol. Ketawa ngakak guling-guling.

タイトルもいいです。中学英語でわかりやすいです。
Let’s use your native language! We are “Local” Guides.

「We are the world」というブームメントが昔ありましたが、
人は「We are the world」でもあり「We are the local」でもある・・・

Local Guides:

①母語で地元の情報を地元の人々へ発信
②自動翻訳機能で地元の情報を非母語/海外の人々へ発信
*ここでは、自動翻訳機能の精度がまだ高くないことは指摘しません

一方、私のLocal Guides活動は、
③移民が移民先の情報を母語で発信
により、多様性を広げる価値があると考えています。

私も、コネクトに投稿しようかなという動機になりました。
ありがとうございます!

@YasumiKikuchi I got your point, so I support this idea.

Sometimes, I don’t understand the translator. Or sometimes, when someone ask a question in Google Maps, I would love to help but I don’t understand the question. Anyhow, I hope there will be an improvement on the translator. Hope it will be better and better.

Hello @iorikun301
Thank you for your sympathy. We’ll put a new breeze!
As you worry, our native language articles may be less popular due to Google Translate. I have never had the courage there. But unless I have the courage, many invisible guides who are hesitant to write will not join.
I think my article may be less popular if a new movement occurs.

Hello, @Ant_Bad_Yogi thanks for the support!
I’m afraid that Google Translate will hinder communication. However, Google Translate grows as it continues to be used. I think this is worthwhile, given that growing Google Translate is one of the top Local Guides contribution.
In the future, my posts will increase in Japanese. Probably less popular. But I take courage for the hidden Local Guides.

I agree, @YasumiKikuchi -san.

By writing in English we could potentially reach broader audience. Yes.

But…, it’s always nice, at least for me, to read post in Local Guides’ native language, eventhough maybe I couldn’t even understand. Hahaa… lol.

But there’s a Google Translate toggle available. Just simply hit it, and voila, we could read the post in our preferred language…

Yes @iorikun301
The fact that I had to write this article in English would be inconsistent with my claim.

This is the factor we are most concerned about. Some Japanese write in both English and Japanese. I think this is a good attempt. English and native language do not conflict. Guides who think that writing in English makes friends with the world guide will be accepted without denial.

Google Translate works perfectly if your native language introduces only one meaning in one short sentence. This article did that.

@YasumiKikuchi

Although I hope to be able to type articles in Chinese, but Google Translation helps me a lot. Most of the time, I still use English in replying messages, that can let everyone understanding.

Hello @KyleZhang
If you want to interact in English, I think you should do it. In fact, more than half of my comments and posts are in English. However, I want to be a model for non-participating guides who want to interact in their native language. Watching me interact in my native language may encourage them to participate.

HELLO @YasumiKikuchi

Do you want to promote Japanese and let everyone participate together?

Hello @KyleZhang , I didn’t reply for a long time.
Instead of emphasizing some language, we aim to create a Connect environment where it is easy to write in your native language. Because we have Google Translate and we are, in principle, map contributors, not language learners.
