There was a life before the Local Guides programme started: the so called “Map Maker era”. I would like to share a screenshot from 2014 and hope that some other “oldtimers” can provide more “heritage”.
I remember that every edit has to be commented with an explanation of its purpose. And concerning the Google+ account: do somebody know if it was obligatory?

Please note, I don’t wanna promote any business or brand, it’s just the screenshot I have. This brand is already very popular, they even survived the socialist era of the GDR. Anyway the owner of the GmbH (Ltd.) is the state of Saxony so the revenue is community-shared.
Nice sharing. I have lots of memories with Map Maker, the professional mapping tool. We had many options there and it learned us how to do the most accurate edits on the map. I remember in the first years of it, Googlers checked edits themselves and even prepare hints for individual edits.
Then we missed it for a long period after a big spam on the map and when it came back all of us were happy. And 2017 was the final station of our great journey. We missed a perfect tool and still Google Maps hasn’t as many editing tools as we had there. Fortunately, I have this chance to receive certificates and a nice Map Maker badge (I shared its photo here) from Google that always remember me of those great times.

I’m sure not many have originals of their map maker days. It’s a great reminder of the early days of Google Maps and the contributions that Map Makers made to the platform but also to see the transformation since.

@Amiran the rich editing in Map Maker was like it is still at OSM, and this is the reason why the latter looks pretty good aswellnice “historical” video from 2011 btw, and there is another newer & very popular one

2004 - 2016 war ich mit 2 Jobs, Mutter, Ehefrau, Haushalt, Garten komplett eingebunden und schlief bei jeder Minute die ich dazwischen “frei” hatte quasi im sitzen ein
Although I like all mapping systems and have tried many of them since several years ago, personally I never get closed to OSM (and even Waze which is for Google, too) as Google Maps. Google Maps is part of my life. OSM is necessary for the world as a pure open-source platform but I only contribute to it when I want to edit one very important thing.
On the other hand, still, even OSM doesn’t have as many tools as we had in Map Maker, and also Map Maker was really user-friendly.
And one other important thing that I like about Google Maps is its cutting-edge tech. One reason for the retirement of MM was that Google focuses on automating things. AI has an important role in mapping and Google is a pioneer in this case from several years ago. Not all mapping tools are doing such a great thing.
The video you shared from WSJ is great. Thanks. Although It doesn’t focus on Map Maker things which is the topic of this thread, I really like it as a Google Maps enthusiast

Ich bin seit 2012 dabei. Angefangen hat bei mir alles eigentlich mit dem Flughafen, weil es so ein Chaos war dortIn der Zwischenzeit bin ich auch /etwas/ in der Innenstadt aktiv und versuche da die gröbsten Patzer zu beheben… Übrigens ist der Flughafen nach einem Jahrzehnt Bearbeitung immer noch nicht fertig was die Karten anbetrifft, obwohl er echt nicht groß ist und ich ständig nachbessere… der liebe Algorithmus und seine Eigenheiten…

I joined the program on July 2016, so I had a little time to play with Map Makers.
I can say that it was a great program, the real origin of Google Maps, but unfortunately with the increase of the members it was quite impossible to moderate, and many issues that we still have in maps were originated in the last months, with wrong edits that unfortunately obscure the great work made by people like you and @Amiran .
When the closure was announced I simply stopped to contribute, and none of my edits were approved nor even moderate.
So I am very happy that, years later, Google decided to create a road editor for desktop, moderate directly by the team.
But without Map makers we will probably not have Google Maps

Hi Chiara, ich probiere jetzt nochmal das ganz normale “Reply”. Eigentlich müsste man dafür auch ne Email-Benachrichtigung kriegen, so wie bei normalen Kommentaren zum Thread auch.
Zum Thema “nicht fertig”: es gibt so zwei Hauptprobleme, dass also immer wieder Markierungen verschoben sind * und man sie mühsam zurückschieben muss. (mühsam, weil es einfach nicht akzeptiert wird oder ewig dauert) Ich frage mich auch, wie diese Besucher-Charts stimmen sollen, wenn die Markierungen irgendwo sitzen bloß nicht da wo sie sollen… Zum anderen stimmen die Ortsangaben meistens überhaupt nicht, also Kennedystraße (richtig) vs. Heinrich-Steinmann-Straße (falsch, weil nur Sitz der Verwaltung) Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Ebene –2, –1, 0, 1, wobei 1 die Hauptebene ist (Abflug) und –1 die Ankunft (nur in T2). So einfach eigentlich, aber schwierig in Maps… Auch dieses dusselige “befindet sich in” was meistens falsch ist
Standardmäßig wird auch Ebene 0 angezeigt, anstatt Ebene 1 (s.o.)
FB nutze ich gar nicht… obwohl ich für die LG Gruppe Interesse hätte… leider kann man sich mit seinem G Konto bei der Konkurrenz nicht einloggen… Gruß aus dem Rheinland!
Der allerneueste Coup: ganz verschwunden ist Parkhaus 2 (50.88018904392695, 7.117466371378503) mit schätzungsweise 300 Fotos und nochmal sovielen Reviews (ist vergleichbar mit P3)
