KD24, It seems like you have been mislead somewhere along your Google Local Guides journey; i get the feeling like you were under the impression this was not a voluntary moment, like you expect some kind of remuneration for your efforts. I am sorry if you were ever given the impression other than Google Local Guides being anything other than voluntary, however your time is yours and you can choose to spend it however your decide, which has always been the case throughout your local guide career.
I just would like to remind you that Local Guide is a volontary program. You contribute as you want, when you want and you shouldn’t expect anything in return.
I’m kinda thinking I’m wasting my time as well. I’m one of the top guides but yet have to really receive any perks or anything. Sorry to see you go! Safe travels!
It is sad you feel that way @Laynep@Kd24 in the early days when the program was small nearly everyone got perks. Today when there are over 120 million Local Guides around the world its much harder to recognise so many people. I feel for your disappointment but encourage you to keep going. If you’re one of the top Local Guides in your area then you’re likely to be recognised at some point.
It is important to note that we are Local Guides not for perks, but because we’re helping our community. Every contribution that helps your community grow will come back to you as your community prospers.
Perks are available and it will vary from time to time and from region to region. It depends on who the Google partners are. We are always working on finding new perks and promotions that can be interesting for the community. There may also be special and/or early access to Google features. You can read more about it on the official support page Get Recognized.
Keep in mind, Local Guides is a voluntary program and many people participate in it because they want to be able to help others via the Google Maps platform. You can read more - “Why be a Local Guide?”
I hope you will change your mind and enjoy the use of Google Maps and posting on Connect.
The accuracy of the map is more important than the rewards and awards that Google give some Local Guides. I am not here for the rewards for I am already rewarded by knowing that people are assisted by mine and many other people’s efforts to keep the information accurate. I wish time come soon where we all are motivated by the wellbeing of all than that of our own.
I understand your perspective @Kd24 . A lot of advices have been given already and it’s okay to feel this way. However, I’d like to reintroduce the program to you, what the Local Guides programme stands for and why we are Local Guides in the first place.
The LG programme is totally voluntary and one thing is central to the reason why we contribute to the Google Maps: to help others and help ourselves too. The reviews, photos and edits we make to the Maps help others make informed decisions about places.
Choices vary and it’s important to fully understand the core values of the Local Guides community itself.
In a bid to encourage Local Guides, rewards are often a way for motivation. However, as a volunteer, rewards are not the passion drive. It’s the feeling to help the society.
While it may take some time to get rewards, I want to encourage you to stay focused and continue to add quality content to the Maps. Your contributions are valuable and very much appreciated.
Be on the lookout for mails on rewards and Local Guides events happening in your city from time to time.
If you need any more help, please do not hesitate to reply.
Recently, some of my friends in level 5 have received gifts from Google like socks, ties, vouchers, etc.
But, it feels like not everyone is rewarded.
I am also in level 8, and had not received anything until last week when I received a hotel voucher. I am still disappointed that I didn’t receive any of those gifts when I was in level 5.
Even if the program is voluntary, appreciation if not rewards are always expected. It doesn’t matter how many millions of Google local guides are there. Over time, the interests of many local guides dies down, so a bit of appreciation at frequent intervals is required from Google for top local guides, at the least.
