Lead Photo for Google Maps - Changing the one in the upper left corner of the screen

Does anyone understand how Google selects the photo that leads on Google Maps? The image in the top left of the maps for one of my favorite pizza places is that of Chicken Wings - they would like it to be PIZZA. Does anyone understand how to control that image placement?

The simple answer is: you can’t, @Ed-42

The "cover image is selected by an algorithm based on quality and relevance of the photo.

What you can do to have more chances is to take the best possible photo, and with the most relevant subject (e.g. food for a restaurant, a room for an hotel, the storefront for shops

Hi @Ed-42

Local Guides have no influence over which picture gets selected as the cover photo. There is an algorithm put in place to select the cover photos.

Business owners who have claimed their listing on Google Maps can suggest what photo they would like to be the cover photo, but it is really the algorithm that decided.

If you like to learn more you might find the Leaderboard of star photos interesting.

If the current photo is not following the guidelines you could flag it.
