Since 1981 I had visited this Garden many times and I am always amused by its flora and wonderful landscaping. I used to climb on the granite rock to enjoy the City view which is magnificent and quite panoramic. I love to visit again and again due to its unique features and due to attractive environment.
Lalbagh was laid out by Nawab Hyder Ali in 1740 in just 40 acres of land. Many tropical and subtropical plants, which were brought here by Tipu Sultan, as one Mango Tree still remains attraction for visitors which was planted by Tipu himself.
Glass house foundation was laid by Prince Albert Victor, which was completed in 1891 AD and it was inspired by the design of Crystal Palace of London now a famous venue for horticultural shows as Rose show held biennially, Mangoes exhibition etc. Surrounded by evergreen Champak trees, Bamboos from Japan, black and white eucalyptus trees etc. Glass House had hosted several dignitaries.
It has four entrances and close to Northern Gate one huge granite rock, which is a geological monument about 3000 million years old and on top of that the Kempe Gowda’s Tower is situated which is a monument of National importance. It also has a beautiful brick structure for Pigeons and a beautiful Lake, an artificial waterfall a bandstand where every Sunday various bands are performing. The entrance to the Garden is marked by a statue of Chamaraja Wodiyar of Mysore. Another Popular attraction is the lawn clock a gift from HMT, leading manufacturer of watches. It has many sections among them are flower beds, Bonsai Garden, cactus garden, pot garden, medicinal herbs garden, Japanese garden, rosaries, wood fossils etc. It’s a major horticulture institute and a horticulture department is also located here.
It’s a most visited attraction by the tourists and public for enjoyment and amusement. Special passes are issued to the people for walking and jogging. It’s a major attraction among the botanist, horticulturist, environmentalists etc. Eco-friendly vehicles are available for the complete garden tour at a price of Rs. 100 per head and a nominal entry fee is charged. It’s very rich in flora and major attraction among the history buffs wanderers soulseekers horticulture students and scholars.
