Lake Synevyr, The Highlight Of The Ukrainian Carpathians

The most beautiful lake in Ukraine and the highlight of the Ukrainian Carpathians is Lake Synevyr. This

is the largest reservoir of the Ukrainian Carpathians, located in the upper reaches of the Terebly River, in the most picturesque region of Transcarpathia - Mizhgirshchyna. The lake is located at an altitude of about a thousand meters above sea level, its maximum depth is 24 m. Synevyr is high in the mountains and its waters are so deep that the lake does not warm even in summer.

Nowhere else you will see such clear and transparent water and an abundance of ancient trees.

The surface of the lake sparkles with blue, but exactly in the middle a small island emerges from the water. This picture looks like a blue eye with a dark pupil in the center - that is why Synevyr got its second, very romantic name: Sea Eye.

There is a legend telling about the name of the lake. It says, that many, many years ago, blue-eyed Princess Sin fell in love with a shepherd named Vir. Sin’s father could not allow such an unequal marriage . On his orders, servants pushed a huge boulder over the shepherd. Seeing this, Sin cried the whole lake, and she dissolved into the surface of the water. Recalling this beautiful legend, the figures of Sin and Vir, which were carved out of mahogany in 1984, are set on the lakeside.Newlyweds from all the environs come to be photographed here: the legend of Sinevir says that lovers who come here on such a day will never part and never stop loving each other.

You can climb to the lake along the path with the mountain stream flowing near it.

Look whom we met on our way to the lake!

Visiting Sinevir you can touch the local life:

and even to play the trembita, it’s the national Transcarpathian music instrument.

@OlgaKlimchik thanks for sharing your beautiful pictures, its reminded me some old times! When I was a student we traveled in Carpathians in winter. We landed in Mukachevo and went from Yasinya → Yeremcha (sorry for my wrong spelling). We even had one night in a little log house where we were sleeping on our skis turned upside down. And we were melted snow and made our tea and food on the water, as like you said the ecology is very good there and water is very clean and testy.

@CaterinaOS I planned to visit Mukachevo and Yaremche this year, but we were strictly limited in time. So it was only Lvov and Carpathians (Hemba Mount, Shipot Waterfall and Sinevir).

This place looks amazing @OlgaKlimchik , I would love to go here!

This is the kind of place I would want to retire and spend my old days ones it will come to that. I bet it was so peaceful, and I really liked the legend about the lake, it gives it so much more character.

Is it possible to rent one of those huts in your photos?

@MortenSI It’s a really fantastic place. Of course you can rent any kind of accomodation there, from huts to hotels, you should seach the village Synevirskaya Polyana (Синевирская Поляна), it’s the nearest place for the lake.

I stayed in Lvov and went to Synevir with excursion, so I can’t recommend the concrete place, but the renting announcements were nearly on the each house nearby.

If you visit Sinevir remember that the lake is in the nature rezerve zone, so you can neither swim nor fish there (you can fish only in trout farms nearby). The bonfire is restricted in Sinevir area too.

It really looks like an amazing place for hiking and relaxation. I’m not really into fishing so that wouldn’t be a problem @OlgaKlimchik .

The best experience for me would even be to stay with a local host family, if that’s even possible in this area.

@MortenSI Everything maybe possible. I think you should find any accomodation which is similar to desired and communicate with the host. The Carpathian villages are not so large and the hosts know each other, they may give you the neighbor’s coordinates or to place you in his home. This scheme worked even in city Lvov when we wanted to stay one more day there.

Lake Synevyr looks like a nice place @OlgaKlimchik Is it just a summer holiday destination? What happens during the cold/snow winter periods at Lake Synevyr?

@AdamGT I have visited Sinevir in summer, but you can do it at any time.

In winter in snowy weather it’s beautiful too. People write about the snow and silence kingdom, healing frosty mountain air. You can walk around the lake or drive in a sleigh pulled by a pair of low Carpathian horses. There is a rental of ski equipment, the slopes are not long and not steep, are suitable for beginners. I didn’t see a sky lifts and there is nothing written in internet about them, but I was were not so long with exursion.
