" The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America” in the United States. Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see “Lake America,” those in Canada will continue to see “Lake Ontario,” and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names. These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now."

You are right @Rthomas3333 it is Lake Ontario and as a proud Canadian it will always be LAKE ONTARIO no matter “who” tries to change it.
Here in Canada we do see Lake Ontario on the maps as @ErmesT mentioned . I live a few KMs from Lake ONTARIO.
Wish Google would do the same, I live very close to lake Ontario just in upstate New York and no one here is changing the name, it’s still lake Ontario to all of us. Wish Google would grow a backbone and put back the correct name.
Names have history and meaning. Why is Google so easily swayed to change the names of places on their maps at the whims of one person. These changes weren’t asked for by the people, or even the native communities in their regions. The lake is called Lake Ontario and the gulf is call The Gulf of Mexico. I’m going to try using other map services until this has been fixed. MapQuest is my first option since it has proper names. I encourage as many people as possible to report the name changes as incorrect on the maps app or the web site.

Sharing an important point regarding the geographical education of our young ones.
It is crucial that we teach them that the body of water between Canada and the USA is Lake Ontario. Lake Ontario has been around for approximately 11,000 years. Please educate our children that “Lake America,” which some may see on certain maps, does not exist and is entirely an error.
