Rubavu district is situated in the Western Province of Rwanda covering an area of 388.3Km 2, with 403,662
inhabitants whose 51.7% are females and 48.3% are male, the district is located on the
shores of Lake Kivu. It has a population density of 1,039 Inhabitants per square km which is the highest population density outside Kigali City. The urbanization rate of Rubavu is at 37% with an urban growth rate of 5%. The population of Rubavu is young (65 % of the population is less than 25 years).
The relief of the District of Rubavu is very hilly, characterized by high mountains stretched to the steep slopes
and very deep valleys whose gorges sprout small water springs and a few marshes. The soil is sandy clay in
some places and in others, it is the volcanic or basaltic soil encountered in areas near volcanoes.
