Despite that Lübeck is listed by UNESCO as a World Historical Heritage due to its Brick Gothic architecture and Hanseatic past, this northern city is also known as the cradle of German marzipan. Several legends exist around its origin. Though, whatever the true is, marzipan became the symbol of sweet and luxury life. As of today, this delicacy is available for everyone’s pleasure and considered as a must-have program for all tourists coming to the city. So, here it is. The best Lübeck’s spots to taste it!
1. Niederegger
Founded in 1806 Niederegger company is one of the oldest companies in Lübeck. On the ground floor you will find everything that makes marzipan lovers’ hearts beat faster. From the small chocolates till the eatable masterpieces. Moreover, the ice cream that is sold on the ground floor (from the spring months) in varieties of tastes.On the upper floor you can find the cafe and the museum, where you can taste delicious cakes and coffee. The museum has an interesting design and tells a good story about the company. The production of marzipan is situated on the highest floor, where you have an opportunity to make your special offer (e.g. handmade pralines with special print or wedding cakes).
2. Marzipan-Speicher
Since 1993 four shops in the downtown exist to satisfy customer’s needs. The marzipan store is a place where you can buy qualitative and cheap marzipan. Above all, you can make a special order of different combinations or variations made of marzipan.
Of course there are also an outside and inside areas.
If you are sitting outside you have a chance to see the Holstentor. One of the disadvantages is that it is situated at the busy intersection.
