The ancient Krishna Mandir located at Patan Durbar Square is said to be carved out of a single stone. The walls has inscription of the Ancient Mahabharata carved on it. Unlike all Pagoda styles of temple being build by Newa people this one is unique Shikhara style having 21 gajurs(roofs).
Hi @RaunakMaskay ,
Thanks for sharing!
This structure is impressive enough on its own, but if it’s really true that it was carved from on single very big stone, that is absolutely mind blowing. I can’t even imagine how they managed to build this with such precision before modern technology.
Can you tell us a bit more about it? is there a special meaning to it having 21 roofs?
I’m letting you know that I have relabelled your post to Travel, as it fits better here being a tourist destination.
Yes it was carved out of single stone built in
1637 by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla. It is said that one night the King saw Lord Krishna and his consort Radha standing in front of the royal palace. He ordered a temple to be built on the same spot.
I exactly don’t know the significance of using 21 roofs or 21 golden pinnacles on top of it.
The number 21 somehow seems significant to me @RaunakMaskay , as if it was planned.
I’m really impressed by this, so thanks again for sharing with us!
I think it for the stability of the structure.
It is 3 storey.
One gajur is in centre to support the base.
It has four faces signifying 4 directions.
8 in the 1st floor 3 a side if you look at the side view.
Again 8 in 2nd floor.
Then close to the central base 4 as a design just to keep up the mountain architectural view.
It may just be for a strictly practical reason @RaunakMaskay , but it sure looks beautiful.
Do people come here for a specific reason, or just to admire the structure?
It’s located in the area of Patan Durbar Square which used to be the Royal palace before unification so lots of tourists come here for admiring it.
Apart it’s architectural significance, both Hindus and Buddhists come here for worshipping.
A main priest performs his rituals daily and this temple is the center of attraction during festivals like Krishna Janmastami, Gai Jatra, Bungdya Jatra, Kartik Nach
I can see why it would be the center of attraction during those festivals @RaunakMaskay .
If I ever were to visit, I’d make sure to go and see this temple.
Thank you for the offer @RaunakMaskay , that i very generous of you!
I might just have to take you up on it some day.
