Knowledge sharing sessions for Local Guides in Sri Lanka 2017

When we were organising meetups, we came to know a lot of Local Guides do not know much about Local Guides program and how to contribute to the Google Maps.

A group of Local Guides in different parts of Sri Lanka have decided to conduct a series of knowledge sharing sessions to address this.

We are planning to have different sessions on following topics.

  • Local Guide program and benefits
  • Basic map editing
  • Basic photography for Local Guides
  • Writing reviews
  • How to use Google Maps in day to day life

It is not limited to these topics. If you need to know about some other topic, please let us know.

We would specially like to share the knowledge with university students and similar groups. They are the most energetic people to promote Local Guides in Sri Lanka. Most students are from different parts of Sri Lanka; therefore they can learn from these sessions and spread the word in their local places. Please feel free to contact us to arrange a session for you.

@JessicaS @TraciC @YK1001 your thought on this would help us to make this a success.

This is not a Google-sponsored event, and this invitation is from the Unofficial Anuradhapura Local Guides Community.

@AnuradhaP this is a great idea. I did one similar last year for my University. @TraciC shared a presentation files earlier and used that for the presentation (customized with few more pictures). I have noted after that presentation some students started Local Guides in Sri Lanka and happy to see some good contributions to google maps. Hope this help others. Always I like to share all my knowledge with other local guides

Thanks for making this.

@IlankovanT Thank you. Yes, there is an educational presentation on Local Guides program for supported community moderators. I am going to customize it and translate it into Sinhala. Why don’t you translate it to Tamil. Hope @NalinK will help us.

It is always a pleasure to see volunteers like you come forward to help others.

@AnuradhaP already I did that in Tamil and shared with few Batticaloa Local Guides, and received some comments too. I have to update those comments now

This is great now we have it in all 3 languages. We can promote LG to a wider audience. Lets do the first one and then I can do one for the Kandians after collecting your experience as well. Maybe you can give me an idea how to organize one for the Peradeniya University. As @IlankovanT has already done one for a university.

@Virangya You can organise a knowledge sharing session. It is not that difficult. Please wait for your meetup. After that, you can organise one. Did you inform university students about your meetup? Just post few printout in student notice boards. If students may join you.

The first knowledge sharing session of the Sri Lanka Local Guides was held at the recently concluded Kandy Photo Walk. This was conducted for the photography students of the Image Art Academy of Kandy. There were about ten students and two instructors.

We shared the knowledge on Local Guides programme with them and most of them joined the Local Guides programme. Sharing knowledge was an amazing experience. We will conduct similar programme around the county in coming months.

@TraciC , this will help more quality contributions to the Google Maps.

Photos are from different participants of the Kandy Photo Walk.

@Virangya Thanks for organizing this and providing us an opportunity to share the knowledge.
