This is the final place in Ireland that Pope Francis visited. In the west by the Atlantic Ocean called Knock Shrine, where the Virgin Mary appeared many years ago. People from all over the world visit. I was here myself a few weeks ago and there was a group from India and the priest said to them at mass, Happy Independence Day

This is one of my favorite aspect of Connect, discovering places that usually are not so popular or advertised by media.
I personally know about Fatima and Medjugorje as places for pilgrimage, but I didn’t know about the one that you showed us, so, first of all, thank you for letting me discover it.
Can you tell me more information about the history of this place? How far is it from Dublin?
Hi @Sorbe Thankyou for your lovely reply. Knock Shrine is a Pilgrimage Site in the west of Ireland in a rural area. In 1879 the apparition happened, It was a very wet night, raining heavy, a young girl and the priests housekeeper were returning home when they saw bright light and figures of people surrounded by light and the apparition vwas of, The Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint John the evangelist ( john the Baptist) an Jesus Christ in the form of the Lamb of God surrounded by adoring Angels. A group of 25 people knelt watching the apparition on a dark, cold rainy night, they stayed for 2 hours watching. The Blessed Virgin is seen to be deep in prayer with her eyes looking toward Heaven. From that day and today this place has been dedicated to Mary, Mother of Jesus, with people attending all year long. Its not as big as Lourdes or Fatima but is still a very special place.

Also the apparition happened 27 years after the, Irish Famine that had lasted 7 years, half the population died on the street ( we were under British Rule of Queen Victoria at the time) and a large number of people emigrated to america ( many died on the ships) this is why there are so many Irish Americans in USA, descendants of these. So at the time of the apparition people in Ireland were still suffering the aftermath of the famine and it is thought that is Why Mary appeared to pray for Ireland. Knock is about 2 hours, 30 minutes drive from Dublin. Thankyou @Sorbe and have a good day
