Thank you for sharing these stunning photos of the temples. Could you tell us more about this place? It would be great to read about the history. They look absolutely amazing and the details on them are incredible.
Do you live somewhere close by or did you go there specifically to see them? How would it be easiest to get there? Thanks!
Kiradu was a prosperous town during 11th and 12th century .The Parmar and Chauhan rules of Kiradu were under the regime of Solanki dynasty of Gujarat. The town got ruined due to foreign invasion. Many magnificent temples were built during the 11th century and are still testimony of ancient glory.
Presently remnants of 5 Shaiva- Vaishnava temples of Maru-Gujarat style are in existence. The Someshwar temple is a unique example of Maru-Gujarat style and has garbhgrih (sanctum-sactoram), antral, mahamandap and dwarmandap it is decorated with sculptures and artistic motifs.
According to a legend, Kiradu was deserted because of a sage’s curse. The sage left behind his disciple to the care of the people of Kiradu, but except for a potter’s wife no one carried out the sage’s wish. The sage cursed the town but told the potter’s wife beforehand to leave and never turn back. Out of curiosity she turned to take one last look at her hometown and was instantly turned to stone. The outskirts of the town have a stone statue purported to be her.
