Kerala facing heavy flood

Kerala is on high alert due to heavy rainfall in the state, with a red warning being issued in nine districts on Friday - Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargode. The state government has announced a holiday for all educational institutions, and over 26,000 people are in relief camps due to the flooding.

Massive evacuation, relocation and rescue by state and reserve forces are also ongoing in the state, with many people still stuck in their homes due to the flooding. Over 300 relief camps have been set up, and already have thousands of families in them, with most relief camps being in Wayanad.

@athulnaduvathur The SOS for floods in Western India including Kerala in Google Maps has been activated. Please share this with your community. I will write a separate post shortly.

We as Local Guides and Maps users can help our local community by flagging affected roads and areas where we are located.

  1. Go to Map, and zoom into any area in Western India. Screen shot below for Kerala, you should see a card for “Western India Floods”

  1. Click on the card, and on this card, you can see the updates and news about latest updates. Here any Maps user can report road closures. Click on that feature “Report Road Closure”.

  1. After you click on “Report Road Closures” you can zoom in into anywhere.

  1. You can then zoom into each local town or area and click on each road that is closed due to floods. Selected roads will the highlighted in blue. Click next and put in the correct information. If this is to highlight flooding, do select the Local Event “Western India Floods” tag. That will get updated in Google Maps shortly

  1. For everyone else using Google Maps to see updates, they will be able to see the areas where road are closed or possibly closed as highlighted by users as below. And each user can update each segment when situation changes by clicking on each alert symbol.

  1. For all flood updates from the Kerala state government, please refer to https://keralarescue.in/ for the updated list of help required, and shelter camps etc.

I will try to find related websites for Karnataka & Maharashtra

  1. I am trying to compile any other lists of MyMaps that are being built to shelter relief and I will share them later as I find them out.
