In 2018, I visited Dominican Republic for the first time, and had the time of my life! My girlfriends and I traveled for a wedding, then turned it into a girls’ trip…best decision ever! In my opinion, Dominican Republic is one of the cheapest places travel to. I only took $100 (American currency) as pocket change, and was able to do excursions, eat and take public transportation. During our trip we spent 3 days at an all inclusive resort and 2 days at an Airbnb. Although the Airbnb was a nice place, I prefered the resort. Both places had their pros and cons.
If you’re interested in staying at a resort, I would suggest Dreams La Romana Resorts and Spa because I am familiar with it. I am sure there are a plethora of other options, but my stay was amazing! The resort is on a beach, where they have an infinity pool, bars, restaurant/dining hall and even a small club. I loved that a good portion of their staff spoke or understood English so my girlfriends and I were not completely lost. The only downside was the fact that the resort was located a bit far from the rest of the city, so we did not get to explore the REAL Dominican Republic until we went to the Airbnb.
Staying at the Airbnb was just as amazing as staying at the resort, however I liked that I was able to experience the authenticity of the city. We took a bus to our Airbnb, which was about 30 minutes from the resort. The Airbnb was just as nice as the resort but of course, we had to find our own food and activities. The first night, our bus driver suggested a restaurant that was next to the place where we were staying. We met locals and had a nice dinner on the beach; very cheap and tasty. The excursion was easy for us to find because of the locals who hang around.
If you’re planning a trip to Dominican Republic, know you will have a great time!

The people we met was welcoming and even taught us a few things about the country, which is where I learned “keloke” from. Keloke or KLK means “what’s up” .

Thanks for sharing your experience in the Dominican Republic! It looks like you had a lot of fun and I am sure that you will return some they if you have the chance. Would you recommend any traditional dishes that you tried there?
By the way, you can add Google Maps links of the places you visited so that it’s easier for other Local Guides to check them out.
