Here are two posts on Kathakali – In both the posts, the Female Role (attire) is presented in detail (Except the Last Photo, where both the male & female artists are seen). In the first post, the artist presents ‘Different Feelings’ (face expression & Hand Posture). Where, as in the second post, the artist expresses ‘Pleasant Feeling’ in different styles.
Hope you will enjoy.
This is from a ‘Kerala Festival’ program, which was conducted in Bangalore.
Thank you dear friend, @user_not_found for your kind words; since this is a dance, the shutter speed is very critical - if the lighting is poor, photography will be very difficult - hope you will agree. (Used zooms between 120 mm to 200 mm, in Sony RX 10).
very sorry in delay reply as i learn Bharatnatyam in my childhood . so i know the important of classical dance in India. as per my knowledge in classical dance facial expression is most important part.
“…in classical dance facial expression is most important part…” You are very correct - In Indian classical dances (The Sangeet Natak Akademi currently confers classical status on eight Indian classical dances, and Bharatanatyam is number 1).
Nice to hear that you leaned Bharatanatyam, in your childhood - Now, in South India, many parents are taking “Teaching” Classical Dance to their children very seriously - what about in your area, dear @Tejal ?
I think classical dance is the base of all kind of dance . yes here is also dance class of kathak and bharatnatyam is going on and people are taking interest in this because it is give you good stand in community. if you know classical dance you can learn any dance easily. after all it is degree course.
Thank you for sharing this great post with us! As I always said before,I never had the chance to assist to a live Kathakali performance, but I would love to.
While reading your post and going through the photos, I was asking myself if the woman is not actually a man and indeed, it turned out to be! Honestly, I was expecting it because I knew that such dances are performed only by men. Furthermore, even the early beginnings of the cinema, the female characters were mainly done by men, as women weren’t allowed acting.
Very happy to see your response & thank you very much.
“…such dances are performed only by men…” - You are (were) very true; but, just for your info, nowadays, there are many Reputed ‘Female Artists’, who even do MALE Roles. Even, there are “Full Kathakali WOMEN Teams” in amateur & professional stages.
“…beginnings of the cinema…” - fully correct - ’ a very valid point - in memories’.
Could you please suggest/guide me, that the second post of Kathakali should follow now, later or not worth?
“…in the second post, the same artist expresses ‘Pleasant Feeling’ in different styles…”
Nice of you that you expressed this - Yes, I strongly believe that any form of art is God’s blessing! Any form of “SADHAK” will do good only to body & mind.
It’s so interesting to see the female characters in the Kathakali dance as well! Their attire, jewellery, and makeup are just as exquisite as the men’s.
I noticed that both artists don’t show their teeth at all while smiling and making different expressions. Is there a reason behind it?
Happy to note that the post was interesting to you, dear @DeniGu .
“… don’t show their teeth…” - Yes, in Kathakali, the dancers do not speak & won’t show their teeth; there are (usually) two vocalists who narrate the story; however, the ‘Demonical’ dancers, do show their teeth & Shout out (produce sound) too.
Thank you very much, dear @DeniGu for your (as usual) motivation. Now a days, professional pressures are consuming a lot time & not able to do much in the forum. But, I shall surely, try to do some more posts, as time permits.
