Karangahake Gorge

A beautiful Gorge to drive through and even stop off, walk and even swim. The area used to be mined for gold in the mid to late 1800s. There is only very small mining that goes on in the area now. The surrounding area has many tracks for hiking, which include access to old mining tunnels.

During the summer it is nice to soak or swim in the natural pools in the river.

Like elsewhere in New Zealand, walking through the bush is safe because there is nothing than can harm you (other than man himself).

Hey @TheEagleEye ,

Another great post from you. I already love this place just by seeing your photo and you adding there is nothing that can harm the visitors. It really looks like the perfect spot to chill and relax in the summer. Did you swim in the river?

It is beautiful @MoniDi . Yes I I have swimmed in the river many times ever since childhood and have also taken my own daughter swimming and hiking there.

During the summer is so relaxing.

Thank you for the stunning photos, @TheEagleEye . It’s so nice to have such beauty comfortably situated to visit regularly. I guess not many people know about that spot?

It is quite popular @IrrPavlova , as it is the favorite route from Auckland to Tauranga. There is an alternative route but not as scenic.

That’s awesome, @TheEagleEye ! I’m impressed how the place remained so green and divine while being popular at the same time.
