KANO a 9th century city

Kano the commercial nerve of northern Nigeria also known as centre of commerce, is the largest city in northern Nigeria.

It is an ancient trading city inhabited since 9th century.
There are many attractions to visit and, as with the rest of Nigeria, the joy is in the people and the buzz of the streets.

Kano is known for Peanut, Hide and skin and many other cereals trading.

The language spoken by Kanawa is Hausa which is one of the 3 most spoken languages in Nigeria and is the 2nd most spoken in Africa.

Where to Visit in Kano
Kofar Mata dye pits are over 500 years old.
The indigo dyes were once used to colour garments for royal families.
You can get a short tour around the pits and they will be happy to sell you cloths and clothes dyed blue in a variety of tie dye patterns.

Kasuwan Kurmi market sells textiles from around the world especially the native Atamfa for women.

• Gidan Makama museum is located in the centre of town. This is where you will fine many historical artifacts about kano.

• Kano Durbar also known as Hawan sallah in hausa is an annual festival celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan and to celebrate Eid El-Adha. Its a a colorful parade by the Emir and his horsemen, accompanied by music and many cultural and colorful displays. This is one of the most important festival and is often attended by many important dignitaries.

• Gidan Dan Hausa house museum this where you will find a collection of artifacts from stone age to present day within the colonial house of the governor from the 1900s. Tour guides are there to take you round and will explain all the objects for you.

• Masallaci (Mosque) is the central masjid where over 50,000 worshipers come for weekly Friday prayers. Its situated near the Emir palace.

• Ganuwa city gates are situated in many parts of the city which are part of the olden city. They are part of the ancient city’s fortress entrance to secure the city against invaders. Among which are Kofar nasarawa, kofar ruwa, kofar mazugal kofar Gadon kaya, kofar mata, kofar mazugal and kofar Na’Ibawa.

Best time to visit Kano: you can visit kano any time of the year. But Muslims festivity period is best if you want to see many cultural activities.

Great post @Sagir . Truly, Kano is an ancient historic city to visit. Lots of relics and culture to discover about this place. The pictures are great too. Reminds me of history classes. Thanks for giving us a peak of this populous place.

Hello @Sagir a very nice post on Kano (in Dutch language Kano = Canoe). Great info and good pictures! It really looks like a place ‘to go’ If I ever do I would certainly like to have you as my Local Guide.

Kano is the second most populous state in Nigeria over 13million people. This is the city of my birth. Kano is were i was raised my first twenty years. Kano leave a lot of memories and this post together with the pictures reminds of all that I did there. Great post @Sagir .

Now I have to plan a visit. :smiling_face:

I have never visited the Northern part of Nigeria. I want to visit Sokoto, Kano and Bauchi - And see Yankiri Game reserve.

I know Kano has alot of history.
