The Kaikoura Seal Colony, on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. There are still quite a number of seals present here, although many hundreds were killed during the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake. It wasn’t because rocks fell on them, but rocks coming up from under the ocean and moving the rocks that were already on the coastline.
If you get an opportunity to visit the seal colony, Kaikoura, and drive down the coastline, you won’t be disappointed.
Yes @Velvel it was terrible what occurred but that is nature. It is an offence under the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978 to disturb, harass, harm, injure or kill a seal. A dog owner whose dog attacks a seal could face prosecution.
It is advised to not get closer than 20 metres to a seal.
I’m unsure @Velvel . These seals move between Antarctica and New Zealand. Maybe one of the Australian LGs can answer that question. @JustineE@PaulPavlinovich
@Velvel yes we do have the same seals in Australia, we share some wildlife with our New Zealand cousins across the ditch. Similar to NZ it is an offence to disturb a seal in Australia although you are permitted to dive with them if you’re game to do it.
