Johar Kund Gwalior.

Caption Johar Kund Gwalior MP India.

Johar practice was prevalent among Rajput queens. It was a type of deadly social practice also known as sati when performed individually. The Gwalior Fort had witness to this incident twice. After the kings had attained heroism in the war, the queens, women of the feudal families, along with the maidens, were committing mass suicide by putting themselves in the huge fire to protect their honor from enemies. Today, standing close to this place is painful to understand the severe pain which was faced by those Royal ladies.

Johar kund is a water tank located at the Northern end of the Gwalior Fort. As first Johar was performed in the tank or around the tank after the fled of Pritihara ruler Mangal Deva after loosing the battle to Delhi’s Sultan, Sultan Iltumish in 1932 AD. This tank’s water was used for Karan Mahal, Vikram Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, Shah Jahan Mahal etc. It’s a historical monument.

Of course to visit this monument visitors have to cross the Karan Mahal as it’s located at the Northern end. It’s a major attraction among the history buffs wanderers soulseekers heritage art and architecture lovers. For this complex which is having the Karan Mahal, Rana Bhim Singh Ki Chhatri etc seperate entry fee is to be paid.
