Japantown Cultural Meet-up

Japantown Cultural Meet-up

Osaka Way

&, Sutter St & Buchanan St, San Francisco, CA 94115, USA

April 08, 2017 @ 11:00 (PDT)

The first cherry blossoms happen in the subtropical southern islands of Okinawa, while on the northern island of Hokkaido, they bloom much later. In most large cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the cherry blossom season normally takes place around the end of March and the beginning of April. San Francisco Japan town is a sister city to Osaka, sometimes is referred to as Little Osaka. We will walk around Japan town and seeing different parts of the Japanese culture from traditional to modern entertainment. 1. Start at 360 degree pop-culture exchange at Osaka Way (this is not a through street). We’ll also experience the first “360 degree” pop-culture exchange between Japan and America, involving anime, gaming, fashion and music. 2. Origami: This year we’ll be seeing some traditional items like origami, an art of folding papers with as little as 10 folds and some with over 100 folds. 3. Food Bazaar will have a variety of foods, some you won’t find normally in Japantown Center such as Fried Mochi. There is also many grilled foods, we won’t know until we get there. 4. Peace plaza for performances will vary throughout the day. We may be treated to traditional dance, JPop (Japanese Pop) performance, martial arts. This all depends on how long we stay and what the line up is. 5. Those who want to stay longer, we can walk around Japan Center. There we can look at the different shows that range from their dollar store which sells knickknacks, snack shops, restaurants, clothing, and other imported household goods. Give us a shootout to let us know you’re coming. You’ll need to bring cash, especially for the food bazaar and dress in layers as it can get a bit chilly later into the day.

Mochi (Japanese: 餅, もち?) is Japanese rice cake made of mochigome, a short-grain japonica glutinous rice. The rice is pounded into paste and molded into the desired shape. In Japan it is traditionally made in a ceremony called mochitsuki.[1] While also eaten year-round, mochi is a traditional food for the Japanese New Year and is commonly sold and eaten during that time.

One of my favorite things to get during the festival is Fried Mochi. This is the only time I’ve seen it sold.

If time permits, we’ll also visit Benkyodo Co, where they hand make mochi.

We’ll be meeting at 11 am at the 360 stage that is on Buchanan St between Bush and Post. It’s not a through street, so you might not be able to see it from a car. Forecast says it might sprinkle. Bring cash and wear comfortable shoes.
