Gyoza (餃子, gyōza) are dumplings filled with ground meat and vegetables such as pork, chives, green onions, cabbage, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and sesame oil hand wrapped in a thin dough. I like my gyoza pan-fried so there’s a crispy bottom. When you bite into one it should be hot, soft, and crispy. Most locals enjoy having gyoza with a cold frothy beer or Japanese nihonshu.
You do not need to go to a specific restaurant to find gyoza, you can enjoy them in all 47 prefectures in Japan. Some prefectures may add a little regionality to some of their gyoza to offer a more unique take on this ubiquitous comfort food.
