Krishna janmashtami also known as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami is celebrated as the festival of Birth of Lord Krishna who is eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.

It is celebrated according to Hindu lunisolar calendar, on 8th day know as Ashtami of the krishn paksh (which is the dark forthnight) in month of Shravan or Bhadrapad which overlaps with August or September month of Gregorian calendar.

Janmashtami is celebrated by people by keeping fast (upavas) ,singing devotionals songs ( bhajan) and keeping a vigil into the night (Ratri jagaran) . After krishna’s midnight hour birth (12 O"clock) status of baby lord krishna are washed (Abhishek) with Panchamrit (mixture of 5 things Honey,liquid jaggery, cow milk, curd and ghee) and Ganga jal (river Ganga water). And new clothed are dressed up and then placed in a cardle (paalana) and Aarti is done

dressed with jewellery and bansuri (flute) mor pankh (peacock feather).

After Aarti the Prasad (holy offerings of food) is offer to krishna .Prasad is usually as follows

1 Panchamrit as mentioned above

2 Panjiri made of coriander powder, dry fruits and powder sugar.

3 MakhanMishri (Butter with sugar) which is favourite of lord krishna

4 Gola Churma (crushed coconuts with sugar and dry fruits)

and all this Prasad is given to ever one and blessings of Lord Krishna is taken.
