Excursions to Ahmedabad encouraged me and my wife a lot. After the Shahi Jam e Masjid, we decided to visit the Jama Masjid, which is located in Manik Chowk, near the landmark Teendarwaza outside the Bhadra Fort.

This mosque is an excellent example of workmanship and Indo-Islamic architecture. Its work was commenced in 1423 AD and it was completed in 1424 as it was built by Ahmad Shah I. A very beautiful and grand place of worship which is a major attraction of tourists. A large rectangular courtyard which can be accessed through three entrances, located in the east north and south directions. All these entrances infact porticos are very attractive. And all the three sides a Pillared corridors at centre these porticos are built. There is a water pond in the middle of the courtyard for Wudhu means ablution tank. Light yellow stones have been used in the construction of this magnificent mosque. On the west side is the main prayer hall which is rectangular. The roof of the prayer hall rests on 256 pillars and some of them are rectangular. There are five huge arched ways to enter the prayer hall. And on the central arch are two towering pillars of minarets, whose upper storeys were damaged in the earthquake. There are very beautiful stone screens between the two outer columns. Which are wonderful examples of carving. Lotus, floral motifs and Islamic murals are engraved with fine carvings on columnss and on ceilings. The main arch or the central Mihrab is made of colored stones, on which magnificent carvings are major attractions. Its roof is having fifteen domes and it’s considered one of the largest mosque in the Western India.

Its graceful Architecture and workmanship including the rhythmic geometrical patterns are just superb. It’s a major attraction for history buffs wanderers soulseekers art and architecture lovers and devotees of all sects.
