Italians in the world - When I'm Italian I belong to the world - #TeamItaly

Italy is one of the most visited countries in the world. 75% of UNESCO heritage is located on Italian soil and we are famous everywhere for food, fashion, high talk, continuous gesticulation, art, music, TV series that romanticize heinous criminals (unfortunately) and many other things.

Well, despite all these elements that make us famous in the world, we cannot go continuously to Italy to taste, walk, speak loudly and hear someone screaming: Marcello!

What can you do if you want to try a bit of Italy without having to leave your country then?

As you surely know, Italians are also very famous for being fervent migrants since Italy exists … (Since when does Italy exist by the way? 400 BC? Roman Empire? 1500? Florence and the family of patrons De Medici? Wrong!

We exist as a country, specifically as kingdom, only since 1861, and as Republic from the 2nd of June 1946

Yes, Italy is a very young country and certainly a marvelous one, but you will be amazed when I’ll tell you how many Italians actually live abroad!

So, here a list of the biggest Italians neighborhoods outside Italy!

At the top of the list we have Sao Paulo, in Brazil, where, in brackets, I live: D

Sao Paulo has not only one Italian neighborhood but at least 4 officially recognized as historical Italian areas:

Bras, Mooca, Bixiga and Barra Funda are the places, and if you want to see what means being an Italian in Sao Paulo you must visit all of theme, as they’re very different from each others!

After Brazil and Sao Paulo one of the most important Italian cities is surely Buenos Aires with its La Boca

From 1861 to after Second World War, many Italians were leaving the country looking for opportunities or running away from poorness, fascism or the crossfire between Axis and Allies.

Many of theme will find a new house in Argentina

At the same time not only Brazil or Argentina were the favorite destinations…

Everybody heard at least once in his life about Little Italy in New York!

Located in the hearth of Manhattan this place represents historically the highest concentration of Italians living in New York, as well as the biggest Italian Community resident in the USA.

If you wanna read an incredible story ( a true story ) about Italian workers, fight for labour rights and immigrant prejudice read the story of Sacco and Vanzetti

Now, as we said Italians are everywhere, and when I say everywhere I mean actually everywhere  What about Italians in Australia? The two biggest historical immigrant neighborhoods of Melbourne are the Greek and Italian one, a millenary friendship that makes me think Greeks and Italians are intended to live close to each others.

It this enough? Have I convinced you?

Now when you wish to do something Italian you can first check if at the corner of your street or in the heart of your downtown we’re already there with our culture, our music, our food and our manners that make Italy one of the 5 most visited countries in the world!

And probably this is the real reason, if Italy is so famous and so visited it could be also because of the 5 million Italians that lives abroad, spreading our different cultures and teasing the whole world with our specialities. When you think this think also on the immigrants that are coming to Italy everyday, looking for a better life and for new opportunities. As Italians we all were migrants, we were and we still are and I’m surely proud to be an Italian Immigrant

Congratulations on this wonderful post @GiulianoOrlando . We have an Italian farming community near Cairns on the Atherton Tablelands. It is wonderful that we live in such a global community. My parents too were immigrants to Australia from South Africa-looking for a different life. It can be very hard leaving family behind. Thanks for sharing.

Nice post @GiulianoOrlando

Well, part of my family lives in France, and another part in Buenos Aires.

The nice part of this is that you can feel at home everywhere in the world

In October 2017, @KarenVChin guided me on a private tour in San Francisco. We crossed Columbus, passing through the Italian neighborhood.

We also spoke about Joe di Maggio, and the church where they took the photos of the marriage

Hi @GiulianoOrlando ,

Thank you very much for this great post. I was waiting to see it and I was surprised to find a lot of myself into it.

Living abroad is a great thing, but there’s no place like home and there’s no place like Italy in the world. I agree with you that we can have some bad habits, but we are unique in creating an atmosphere that recreate our country spirit even abroad, and we are really good in community spirit.

Wish you all the best during your stay in Brazil and keep on updating us on your great adventures there.
