I am experiencing issues with adding missing places and removing duplicate places - Such edits are immediately “not accepted”.
Can you please tell me if I am doing something wrong and how to fix those issues? Sharing more information below
Issues with adding missing places
- Old Abandoned Antenna (location)
Interesting place for photos, while travelling several people asked me about it. Unfortunately it was not on Google Maps. I put it as “tourist attraction” and added several photos.
- Old Abandoned House in the desert. (location)
Good spot for photoshoots.
- Small Rock Pool (location)
I was staying at a guest house nearby and they told me that there is a small rock pool close to the place. Took me a while to find it, would be nice if it was marked on Google Maps. Will be useful for others visiting the area. Tried categorizing the place as an “outdoor swimming pool” since there is another rock pool nearby on Google Maps with that category. Didn’t work. Tried also categorizing it as Tourist Attraction - also didn’t work.
Issues with removing duplicate places
Here the process is straightforward: Suggest an Edit → Close or Remove → Duplicate of another place → Submit
- Glencairn Beach
Original Place → location
Duplicate place that needs to be removed → location
- Anse Source d’Argent
Original Place → location
Duplicate place that needs to be removed → location
- Prohodna Cave
Original Place → location
Duplicate place that needs to be removed → location
Prohodna Cave is the official name, God’s Eyes Cave is the nickname, they are both the same cave - Prohodna.
- Betong Island
Original Place → location
#1 Duplicate place that needs to be removed → location
#2 Duplicate place that needs to be removed → location
#3 Duplicate place that needs to be removed → location
Pulau means “island” in Malay

Hi @thevisualg
Let me try to help you.
You suggested two new places under the category Tourist attraction. Honestly, I believe putting those two places on the level of the Eiffel tower and similar hugely important tourist magnets is overly ambitious. And not correct.
Please see
How to get Edits and New Places Approved
Places without a phone number and a website or at least some online presence are known for being difficult fur Google Maps to verify.
Regarding merging places you could take a look at my notes on Merge Workflow.
Re your example 1 and 2:
The two have different categories. The category beach is a geographical feature which is not to be selected by we users. So you will need to seek help on this in the Maps Support Forum.
Regarding the cave. The second location has already been successfully been removed.
Your 4th example is slightly different. Again geographical features like an island is not a normal pin but an area. Location 3
https://maps.app.goo.gl/AZwg3bjtUFkjVsMy6 is very different as adding photos and reviews is not possible.
Such places will never merge when we suggest this.
Cheers

To become a tourism object, the place must have a name that is recognized by the government or local community.
someone manages it.
We don’t know the age of the building, what if one day someone comes to the place and the building collapses
Hi @MortenCopenhagen
Thank you for the quick response and sharing your experience. After reading your guides I feel confident in solving the issue with the Duplicate places by following your process.
However, when it comes to the first issue - the inability to add missing places, I cannot do anything since the places are abandoned and have no phone numbers or websites linked to them. Also my trust score is probably negative after trying to unsuccessfully do multiple edits of the same places. I guess I need to let go as you mentioned in your guides
It is a shame, people might have found those remote abandoned places interesting.
We should already start organizing a rebellion against those machines dictating our lives
It will only get worse.
Thank you for your help.

Hi @rismamurdiana
What solution do you suggest? If another category, which one?
Yes, @thevisualg
It can be a hard pill to swallow when our personal view on what is important to share with the world collide with the grim reality of the list of categories.
Not many local guides are aware that the list of categories is actually the only way Maps will whisper to us what places can and can’t be added on Google Maps. If not in the list of categories this is how Google Maps will let us know not to add such places. Creative use of the categories will often result in such places evaporating sooner or later.
Okay, there is also this help page:

Cheers and best of luck
