Issue in uploading photos - photo rotates

Sometimes when you upload photos, they rotate and change in orientation. I have seen many posts with rotated photos, and then it happened to me. I had to pre-rotate the photo before uploading and then it came out right. It happens only occasionally and to some pictures… Anybody knows the reason and the answer? Either this is an issue with the Forum, or could also be because of the software I use for re-sizing. The first pic is the one that is pre-rotaled and uploaded and the second one is of normal orientation before uploading.

Hi @Sarath-Ab if you are using your smartphone to capture or take photos, you need to set the orientation on your device to auto-rotate this enable you device to make horizontal photos not to face upwards or downwards which will be opposite of what you wanted.

If you use a dedicated point and shoot or any type of camera, you might need to check the oriantation after each edit, if you do them, I do not know if dedicated cameras have auto-rotate feature. Thank you.

Thanks @Raphael-Mahumane and @TheEagleEye . OK I will work on that and make sure auto rotate is on… yes I use the smart phone, but it happened only to a few and they happened to be resized. And it didn’t happen to all resized photos. Strange I had to offset such photos by 90 for them to appear normal on the post !! Thanks anyway I will watch out…

@Raphael-Mahumane I will try it out and if there is no problem, I will make it a solution… I have to take a photo and upload to see - one with autorotate and one without… give me a few days please… to trial it… Thanks…

Hi @Sarath-Ab !

Sometimes it happens to me too, especially when I crop a photo! But not with every photo !

Hi @davidhyno You may have a point here… first time it happened was in fact when I cropped a photo. Let’s keep a track.

Hi @Raphael-Mahumane what do you think . I haven’t still tried your solution.

@Sarath-Ab I am not sure how cropping does that, I use cropping most of the time on Android, but it never happened to me before. If you do cropping on PC , after cropping your photo you can use your default photo viewing software that can be found in windows or any other operating system you use. View the photo and rotate it from there, by doing this it will be saved to the correct angle or position of your choice. Try that and give me feedback. Thanks.

Hi @Raphael-Mahumane , True, I have no problem in cropping or resizing a photo and getting the orientation right. The problem is one of orientation change in uploading to a post in this forum, then it just rotates - seemingly at random, some photos change orientation in uploading, some do not… we need to figure out which ones do !! And the way it rotates is also at random - some 90, some 180 !! Surprisingly @davidhyno my cropped image seem to work all right…I hope the problem is clearer now.

Hi @Raphael-Mahumane , @davidhyno , @TheEagleEye ; I have tried some photos again, and auto-rotate was on @Raphael-Mahumane ; and certainly they were not cropped @davidhyno ; I took a number of photos and one kept on rotating. Somehow some editing on the photo and saving fresh did the trick. It happens so random, difficult to figure it out.

I’m unsure what the problem is @Sarath-Ab , maybe the size needs to be adjusted a little.

@TheEagleEye @Raphael-Mahumane @davidhyno . It is a pity we have to leave this topic without a conclusion, but I see this happening so frequently in many of the posts… wonder why the forum administrators cannot address this issue… @sonnyNg @AriMar

@Sarath-Ab you can tag a moderator to get official feedback. I am tagging one here.

@AdrianLunsong Can you please assist us here and clarify to this local guide. Thank you.

Thanks @Raphael-Mahumane , I have also already tagged two moderators. Hopefully somebody will be able to help us here. I did a post today on letter boxes and a number of photos (using camera, not phone) changed orientation. Finally, some minor edits and a fresh save solved the problem.

Hi @Raphael-Mahumane This is the post on Letter Boxes where they kept on changing orientation.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and concerns.

In relation to the situation, for the moment it would be most advised to edit the photos and save them with the ratio 16:9 or at least 3:2 on Google Photos.

On the other hand, we will check from our side for any possible solution.

I just want to check, @Sarath-Ab , if some of the photos from your reply would be with the issue?

Yes @sonnyNg , This happened to the photos included in this post as well as the reply to @Raphael-Mahumane . This also happened to a number of photos in my Letter Box post (photos taken with a camera not a phone). Even pre-rotating them did not help, but minor editing and a fresh save worked for a stable orientation.

Hi @Sarath-Ab ,

Thank you for the details.

This is a problem that happens nearly every time I attempt uploading photos. It’s a problem that really discourages me from sharing.

I consider myself a long time aficionado of digital photography, I’ve used them exclusively since 1997. I have uploaded nearly 8,000 photos to Maps and many more than that on other social media outlets.

I have never encountered this issue anywhere else.

It’s incredibly frustrating to work on a post. The workflow is already much more convoluted than any other place I post. Compress the photo (I use two different apps, outcome the same), upload photo. When it uploads rotated, I’ve tried ALL of the suggestions above to ZERO effect.

I am a visual storyteller. The inability to control how my photos show up really is a bother. It’s gotten to the point that I just leave the weirdly rotated photos in my post.

Tagging in here in case a solution (or at least a reliable cause) is found.
