Strange winter this, isn’t it? Do you have any snow anywhere? I don’t mean the artificial just on the ski slopes but like on the trees and ground, you know… The following picture is yet one month old, sadly.
Hey @CaptainHook ,
Sofia was covered in snow past week. It is the last 2 or 3 days that it started melting and the weather is warming up.
Wow, honestly I didn’t know that was possible - I still have Bulgaria associated rather with sea and summer than winter. But I’ve heared there are some pretty cool new ski resorts - is it worth comming, @GeorgesHR ?
Hey @CaptainHook ,
I am popping in here! We are famous with our Black Sea coast but we do have some very beautiful mountains too. I’ve shared some photos from Rila Mountain which has snow in May. And actually we have quite rough winters here, as well as very hot summers. I think @MarinSt can tell you more about the mountains and ski resorts here in Bulgaria.
See you around!

Hi @CaptainHook and @NadyaPN ,
Thank you for tagging me into the discussion! I love winter and for me it is a beautiful season exactly because of the snow.
Unfortunately, in the recent years we don’t get much snow. In the cities the snow is hardly lasting for long and in the mountains is also not enough for the whole winter sports season. So if you insist to ski or snowboard on real snow you have to be lucky when booking a trip. Otherwise, the biggest winter resorts in Bulgaria are equipped for artificial snow for at least part of slopes which helps them being less dependent from the weather conditions.
@CaptainHook , how are the winter sports developed in the Czech Republic? I’m a ski fan and am very interested in exploring ski opportunities outside Bulgaria next season. In the meantime, on the official tourism portal of Bulgaria you can check more info about our winter/ski/snowboard locations and resorts.
Cheers,
Marin
Hello again, @MarinSt and @NadyaPN
and thanks for your input. Rila is beautiful, I must see it one day. Perfect photos, @NadyaPN !
As for the skiing in Czech republic:
I think we are pretty well developped. If what you want are Alps, then sorry, our highest mountain is 1602m above sea level. However, you can ski almost everywhere around the country that is surrounded by mountains. It doesn’t take more than an hour to get on the slopes from virtually anywhere within. All the resorts are rather small and tend to get crowdy but artificial snow is a norm and it’s practically granted you can do some alpine skiing in the season. For crosscountry skiing, the conditions are even more favourable. Depending on the weather for sure but stil the options go from taking your skis into a tram and going for a trip at the city limits up to maintained tracks with machine cut trails in the mountains.
No snow here in the Philippines. Haha but would want to visit some country that snow falls. Maybe Europe. But that’s far from possibility though…
Japan and New Zeland must be much closer.

Thanks, @CaptainHook !
Sounds nice, especially when the slopes are so close. In my home town, when I was a kid, the closest slope was ten minutes walk. Imagine going for skiing every single day after school.
The ski resorts in Bulgaria are very condensed too, especially the ones closest to Sofia (one hour drive). So they all plan do expand with more lifts and slopes.
@MariahJhoheena , I agree with @CaptainHook . You should take a chance to closer location and enjoy the snow.
Cheers,
Marin
Hi @CaptainHook ,
I guess winter is coming later this year.
For the last couple of weeks we had low temperature and snowing in the mountains. Now the ski resorts are all covered in white, so perfect conditions for ski or snowboard. And in the next week we expect snow in whole Bulgaria, even in the cities.
How is the winter going on in Czech Republic? Do you have some snow now?
I hope other Local Guides can share also some info with us.
Cheers,
Marin
Hi @MarinSt
Thanks for the information.
The situation here is a bit delayed as we had rather warm days last week but similar as it’s about to change.
The first snowdrops that have risen will die probably. And in the mountains there’s yet enough snow.
Hi @CaptainHook ,
Usually the last snow falls end of February and the first week of March, so I think the winter is almost over. We should start planning the summer vacations.
Cheers,
Marin
Oh yes! But spring comes first. I plan to go to Italy. (I don’t like hot weather.)

Hi @WalterSanders ,
Very nice snow field. Where did you take the picture?
In Bulgaria there is a whole week of heavy snowing and very low temperature. I hope it doesn’t melt too fast.
Here is a photo from yesterday. Now it’s more because it was snowing all night long.
Cheers,
Marin
Hello @MarinSt
The photo is made near my home place.
It is Eberhardzell in South Germany.
The weather forecast says that the snow end next week
I like Winter but I’m waiting for spring😁
Ooops! Almost forgot about this thread…
…yesterday, this happened in Prague!
