Hello, I am Jerry Kallam and just wanted to share some advice for the novice, beginner snow skiing. With the airline industry somewhat struggling, Southwest posted some cheap ticket prices. I was able to get 6 round trip tickets from GA to DC for less than $1000. So, where to go and what to do with these tickets. We had planned to go to NY City and experience the Christmas decor and atmosphere, but with the new restrictions we had to change our plans. We flew into Ronald Regan in DC and drove to the lovely country side of Davis, WV (Canaan Valley Resort) (3 hours, but it was worth it).
My introduction to snow skiing was being taken to the top of Flachau, Austria https://goo.gl/maps/of4JsbBVGRh5JK6r8 and the guy that said he would show me all I needed to know, left screaming, “see you later sucker”. So, I wanted to introduce my kids in a more proper manner. Snow was limited in Davis, and the slopes had pushed their opening days back another week. That left us with White Grass, a cross country ski area. My thought was at least they will learn some technique and experience the balance needed to down hill. We found the staff to be nice and encouraging. We did opt for the mini lesson for our entire family. The boys and my daughter took to the skiing like they had down it before. Davis had temperatures in the 50’s the week we were there and White Grass https://goo.gl/maps/Kh2JTxTKgvJvBdb78 had done a good job keeping their cross country trails covered in snow. The cafe was a hit at lunch time. We tried the chili and burritos, but our son’s grilled cheese was the bomb. Next time I will get the grilled cheese and the chili.
That evening we heard Timerline had an impromptu opening, so the next day, we went over to Timberline https://goo.gl/maps/96ZWkNcpj8Lnoqyu8 and found 1 blue and 1 black slope open and running. The boys opted to ski and they had a blast. The crosscountry lesson had given them the confidence to go down the blue run first and then they all did the black run next. Timberline had a great staff and they also had a good lunch for a bunch of hungry skiers. The burgers were 7 out of 10 and the coffee was hot enough to warm even the coldest guy there.
We are back in southern Georgia and all four of my kids are asking where and when we are going to go skiing again.
