Interractive Tram Museum in Zurich, Switzerland

Hello there,

Here is another idea of what to do with kids in Zurich. We have a great museum for all the fans of trains - the Tram Museum, children love it all!

There are different trams represented, which were servined the public transportation needs across the time. You can enter and explore each one, get to know its technical side and get the feeling of the past. It is a great experience for everyone!

Kids especially love that small play-tram: there is a wheel on both side and when kids move it around, it brings the mechanism in movement and the trams goes forward. Just mechanical as it can be, all children have great fun being so srong to move a tram! Although it can be quite difficilt, if there are other children on the other side of the tram, moving the wheel to get forward on their side as the same time :slightly_smiling_face:

The museum is not big and you cannot really get lost there. There is a place with tables and chaiers for parents to chat and to meet. A coffee machine is available as well and the price for a coffee is quite moderate for Zurich, although only coins are accepted and no change to be expected.

The museum is not particularly good heated, as it is opened only on four afternoons a week. So it is too warm in a winter jacket and too cold in a shirt. Be sure to dress up your kids properly, so that they neither freeze, nor sweat. I took thin fleece jackets to put on when we were there

There is a tv in one tram and you can watch documental movies about how the trams were built and there is a libriary in another tram. You can grab a book and read it there, while your kids play. Books are all of course about trams and trains in Zurich and in Switzerland. I loved the idea

And this is a puzzle with a map of public transport network in Zurich. It turned to be so difficult to complete! I was fast in putting together the lines I ever used. And I was completely lost with all the other names of stops and colors of other lines! So there is a lot more to explore for me in Zurich :slightly_smiling_face:

There are also pages on tables and colored pens, so the kids can color some trams (of cource, that else))) and have a break.

AND there is a huuuuge Brio railroad for kids to play! You cannot move the parts of the road, as they are fixed to the table, but you can move everything else : all the different kids of trains and all the other train related equipment. The railroad is also made on a kid friendly height of the table, so many kids of different ages can play there are the same time.

This is a nice post @KseniaM !

It reminds me very about the Tram Museum in Krakow. https://goo.gl/maps/2CuTSQrLz1ECtoN36

Check it on Google, if you like. I’m not so deep in technical issues involved, but my son and I have had a fun time there.

@LuigiZ hi

I find it great they try to preserve old trains. They actually all working and there are a couple of days a year some of them are running through the city!

By the way, it’s not a children museum. They made this museum interesting for children as well. But there are a lot of people fastinated by Swiss railway, so the museum is well visited by elder gentlemen as well :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for sharing the link! Looks like fun! Will definitely put it on my bucket list!

Can you explore the trams from the inside? Or is it a no-touch-museum?

Hi @KseniaM

Train Museums are always a fun to see. Here in India too, we have some 3-4 Train Museums as the rail network in the country is quite big and there are many interesting stuffs which one should know.

The best thing I like in this type of museum is “Toy Train”. A dummy train is generally run on the museum garden - both for children as well as adults. Really enjoyable activity … :grinning:

Hi @KseniaM ,

Thanks for the wonderful and interesting post! I really enjoyed it!

I am sure that it would be very interesting for the children but for the parents as well. I’ve never been to such museum but would like to. I think that through such museums we can learn a lot, combining it with a lot of history and innovations as well.

In my country the public transportation got better last years, we have also а subway in the capital of the country. Sometimes when there is a lot of traffic, I prefer to use it than my car, because I can reach the particular place faster.

Hi @Tushar18

thanks for reaching out! I’ve heard a lot about Indian railway system, it fascinates me how the things work over there!

How are the prices by the way? Affordable?

Hi @KseniaM ,

Thank you very much for taking interest in Indian Railway system.

Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in the world - it comes in rank 7 or 8. The system is very much complicated here - but serves very well according to the need of people. It feels amazing to see how the people are working there with so much efforts.

Yes, the transportation in Indian Railways are very much affordable … and almost very meagre for the poor people. It has a fare system by which all the costs are almost covered.

Hello @PoliMC and thank you for reaching out!
I am happy to hear there were steps undertaked to improve the public transport system in your country! It is an important aspect of improving an overall environmental situation at any place - to offer people a more environmental friendly alternative to get somewhere.
There are cases I prefer to take a car as well - and there is a cool interractive car museum nearby in Germany, I will make a post on it!
