21st February is a remarkable day observed for respecting the Language Martyrs, who sacrificed their lives in order to protect Bengali as a National Language.
They protested against making Urdu as the only state language of Pakistan in 1954.As they came out on road at 9:00 a.m,
police arrested several of the students for breaking (violating) section 144 Act. As the other students got enraged by this issue, students tried to storm into the legislators’ building in order to ask them to present the Bengali language issue at the assembly. At that very moment, police opened fire & killed several of protesters including Abdus Salam,Rafiq Uddin Ahmed,Abul Barkat & Abdul Jabbar.
This is one of the very rare incident in history where people had to sacrifice their lives for their mother tongue. In order to commemorate this movement, Shaheed Minar, a symbolic monument, was erected in the place of this massacre
.Every year, in 21st February, a lot of crowd gathers in this place, in order to show their respect & gratitude towards the martyrs with bouquet of flowers.
In November, 1999 UNESCO declared this day as International Mother Language Day, which is observed all over the world, every year. We, Bangladesh Local Guides, along with other communities went there in order to represent GOOGLE & pay our tribute to the Language Martyrs who have sacrificed their lives, so that we can use Bengali as our state language in all stages of our life.
