আজ আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস। ১৯৫২ সালের একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি কিছু তরুণ যুবক নিজের বুকের তাজা রক্ত ঢেলে দেন। আমরা তাঁদের ভাষা শহীদ বলি। সেই শহীদের রক্তের বিনিময় আজকের এই বাংলাদেশে।
প্রতি বছরের ন্যায় এবারও যথাযথ সম্মান ও মর্যাদার মাধ্যমে পালন করা হলো আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস। দিবসটি উপলক্ষে প্রধানমন্ত্রী রাষ্ট্রপতি সহ সর্বস্তরের মানুষ জাতীয় শহীদ মিনারে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করেন। ২০ তারিখ দিবাগত রাত বারোটা এক মিনিট থেকে এই কাজ শুরু হয়। বাংলাদেশ লোকাল গাইডস এর পক্ষ থেকে শ্রদ্ধাঞ্জলি অর্পণ করা হয়।
১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ ই নভেম্বর ইউনেস্কো একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেয়। ভাষাভাষীর দিক থেকে বাংলা পৃথিবীর সপ্তম জনপ্রিয় ভাষা। ১৮৯ মিলিয়ন মানুষ এই ভাষায় নিজের মনের ভাব প্রকাশ করে।

The Bengali flag features a bright red disc on a green field. The flag is quite simple, but it has significant meaning behind the design. The red disc has two distinct meanings. First, it represents to sun rising over the nation. Next, it also represents the bloodshed for those who fought for the country’s independence. The green field of the flag represents the beauty of the land of Bangladesh.

Thank you a lot for the interesting information @RafsanRana , it’s great to learn new things about a different country and culture. What is fascinating to me is that red and green have a similar symbolism behind them in our Bulgarian flag, but we have white as well, which represents purity.
