In Indonesia there is a special ritual called halal bi-halal.
During this, Indonesians visit their elders, in the family, the neighbourhood, or their work, and show respect to them.
This could be done during or several days after Eid Mubarak.
Usually core family and neighbour first during first day of Eid Mubarak, further relatives in the next day, and colleagues in days to weeks later after they get back to work.
Before starting to work some company have this kind tradition to do halal bi halal in a hall, convention room or alley of the manufacturer so everybody can do face to face hand on close clap position go to the front until the two hand meet each other and said to each other “mohon maaf lahir dan bathin”, please forgive me literally and down deep in your heart".
Start with the elder one or the chief in the orhanization , next second in command , than stand next to the chief, the third one ask the forgivenest to the chief and the second in command person then stand next and so on.
The longest row that i follow is about two hundred workers in my departement.
Some add additional such as lunch together or dinner together.
Relative can be :
- alumni class, kindergatten, elementery school high school. university,
- friends same working company, kampoong,
- pilgrimage from same kampoong to the city.
This year this halal bi halal is shifting from in real life to virtual.
I do Zoom with my elder in my big family just showing my closed clapping hand in front of my chest and say “mohon maaf lahir dan bathin”
Halal bi halal is a typical Indonesian habit not only forgives one another, but also creates a condition of unity. Halal bi halal is only a religious ritual, but it is also a good tradition of humanity and nationality.
