Enjoy And know that you are welcome here to visit and tourist.

The carnival of the Dominican Republic is celebrated every year during the month of February, culminating with its biggest celebration: Independence Day. Dominican cultural identity and creativity are shown throughout this vibrant month.

The celebrations in the Dominican Republic date back to the year 1500, in the ruins of a city called La Vega, even before they were held in the city of Santo Domingo, the capital. The carnival began almost three centuries ago, before Dominican independence in 1844. Before gaining its independence, the Dominican Republic suffered an unstable history of occupation by Spain, France and Haiti.

Christopher Columbus arrived on the island of Hispaniola, today known as the Dominican Republic and Haiti, during his first trip to America in 1492. The capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, was the first settlement of Spain in the New World.

The attempt of the Dominicans to gain their own independence was stopped by the Spaniards, since it regained the eastern side of the island under the Treaty of Paris in 1814. Seven years later, the Dominicans achieved independence and expressed the hope of joining the Republic of Gran Colombia (which today almost comprised Ecuador, Panama, Venezuela and Colombia). However, in 1822, Haiti conquered the entire island by ruling it for 22 dreadful years.

During the Haitian occupation, Juan Pablo Duarte, from Santo Domingo, created a secret society called “La Trinitaria” and planned a coup against the Haitian rulers. On February 27, 1844, Juan Pablo Duarte and the rest of “La Triniatria” achieved the independence of the Dominican Republic as a sovereign state with a cannon shot from the “Puerta del Conde”, in Santo Domingo and raised the blue, red and White of the Dominican Republic.

Today, on Dominican Independence Day, locals honor their founding fathers, Juan Pablo Duarte, Ramón Matías Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez at the “Puerta del Conde”, in Santo Domingo, where the declaration of the War of Independence, on February 27, 1844. The president of the Dominican Republic also delivers an annual speech on this day to pay tribute to them.

The carnivals that are celebrated on these dates are very famous and are in a town called La Vega. people go there every Sunday of the month to celebrate and enjoy.People disguise themselves as many things and the most recognized are the (hell devils) among others.

We Dominicans have a saying that says DOMINICAN REPUBLIC HAS IT ALL! This identifies us a lot, we are a country of culture, we like parties and share with everyone and we are very friendly, and we like the chercha.

The interesting history of the independence of the Dominican Republic is intertwined with its imposing February Carnival, it is an experience that everyone should enjoy at least once in their life
