Have you ever been in a situation where you thought to yourself: “Wow, how come there aren’t a bunch of people in this incredible place?” or “I bet if people just had enough information about this place, there would be many more people here right now”?
So, this is the kind of place that gives me the most pleasure to share about. From an isolated island in Indonesia, to a Peruvian village, to an incredible unknown local restaurant in the countryside of Brazil. Some people say that a place like this will lose its charm if too many people start pouring in to check it out, but I still rather use technology such as Google’s Local Guide initiative to spread the news. Why? Because I believe there will always be interesting places like this to be shared and if a place becomes popular, good for the local community! More income from the tourism and more opportunities for the locals to share their culture! Of course it will be up to them to establish proper boundaries and create a sustainable structure to prevent this influx of tourists from damaging nature or ruining their businesses, but I see it as a good thing overall.
How do you guys see it? Are you the type of person who believes some places are better of left untouched, or would you rather share these hidden gems with the world through technology?
I will take a look at the posts you referred me to and try to continue to increase my list as I go! =)
I am actually not from Indonesia, I am originally from Brazil, but have lived in a couple of places before coming to Indonesia around 3 years ago. Now trying to explore things more locally whenever possible… hehe!
I’m happy to see your reply and you’re welcome here
It mush be great to live in Indonesia now. I hope you enjoy it and I’m looking forward to read your posts as all the places you’ve listed so far are really amazing!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful post and bringing up this very important questions.
I worked myself for an immense time in the tourism sector. I know it can contribute something big to development of a city, town or country, but it can also destroy a lot.
Hi Jacob, /? Thank you for stopping by and supporting the article and the discussion! I do believe it is always a bit of a dilema isn’t it? To leave the place untouched and keep providing an extremely exclusive experience to the lucky few who find it, or to let it lose its charm a bit but make it more widely accessible… always tricky! Cheers!
Yes it is. One of those places is Butterfly Valley in Turkey. Once unknown and only visited by Hippies and outdoor lovers it was a piece of stunningly clean nature. Now open to everyone it lost its charm.
Thank you again for starting this interesting discussion @cauemotta
