Hi @MohazinCC , happy new year.

The total amount of views has been updated a few hours ago, so you can see the new value now.

Let me say that it is quite normal to have some delays in the views number, because that information has a very low priority. When needed, low priority information are delayed to keep the resources active on highest priority services, like navigation, where real time information are necessary.

Have a good day

@MohazinCC

Please fix the dead link in your post.

Cheers

@MohazinCC I have a similar situation for my photo with the most views. Soon after posting it, the views increased very quickly by thousands per day. Just close before reaching 2 million of total views, it slowed down extremely and remains at less than 10 views per day (probably since two months ago). My own explanation for that, is one or more of the following reasons:

  • In the beginning my photo was placed at a very exposed position, either as place’s banner or one of the first images being displayed, when people watch the place, which explains the rapid increase of views. Later, pictures of other users replaced this good position, so users need to scroll through many photos before being able to see mine.
  • Since it is a touristic place, it might be also depending on the season, how people watch the place at all. I.e. in spring and summer more tourists are planning to visit the place and watch the place on Google compared to fall and winter.
  • Possibly there are other reasons, I cannot imagine.

@MortenCopenhagen and @ErmesT the mentioned photo was another mystery from the beginning:

While I still can see it under My ContributionsPhotos, pointing to the place, I cannot find it when opening the POI - neither under “My own” nor by scrolling down through all (not many) images of that place.

In addition to the reasons mentioned by @WilfriedB I can add the following:

The photo might have been taken down by Google for polity violations (correctly or wrongfully).

The photo might have been promoted to also represent the city, city district, or country. And this is no longer the case.

@MortenCopenhagen ,

The photo might have been promoted to also represent the city, city district, or country. And this is no longer the case.

Could you clarify this for me? Are you talking about a photo that was added to a city and then taken down? Or are photos sometimes actually to a city level and removed from the original POI?

Hi @Rednewt74

Alfred, there is a special AI put in place to select photos from places inside an area to also represent the area. Open any city place sheet and you will see a ton of photos. And no link or button to add photos. Often very colorful and with derp blue sky are selected. I consider it to be an honor to have your photos selected to also represent the city.

Look for the 'By you" tab under your city to see which if your photos that git selected.

Being selected will get you a ton of extra views.

I hope this helps

@MortenCopenhagen ,

Thank you for additional information. I have seen some of my photos featured at a town level. But does this acknowledgment or “promotion” actually remove it from the original poi? I believe with mine it did not. Another question. if you see a photo or video in a guide’s maps profile that is linked to a city and not a specific poi in the city; does necessarily mean they posted it that way?

This has been on my mind for two reasons one, is because I had been thinking about factors that could boost a poi’s images views.

And Secondly, because some of the Top100 images are linked to a city not a POI.

@Rednewt74

When promoted to also represent an area the image remains at the original pin.

Pics at areas that are not linked to a real pin inside the area was uploaded illegitimately.

If a pin inside an area is no longer existing I don’t know what the consequences are for promoted pics.

Every photo has a different story, @WilfriedB

My top photo was flagged as “not appropriate” by Google Maps after reaching 1.2 million views. So I took another photo of the storefront, that is my actual top photo.

Another of my most viewed photo was about a clinic where they made COVID tests. The photo gained thousands of new views every day during the pandemic, to slow down a lot when COVID was no longer an emergency.

The photos that are not blocked but are not visible on the POI are one of the interesting mysteries of Google Maps

@MortenCopenhagen thanks a lot for you explanations! I can indeed confirm them after doing some research (using the desktop) for my photo mentioned above.

First I searched the area close to the pin where I originally posted it, with no success. In fact searching for a pin did not help at all, only searching for the city name without any further details, showed me the pin of the town, which does not allow users to add photos (as you said “no link or button”).
My photo does not appear as the banner of the town, but clicking the banner shows indeed “a ton of photos”. To find my photo, I either need to scroll down a long way, or click the tab “von mir” (“my own”?).
This way I learned, it is not the only photo of mine appearing under the city pin. For each of those I’ll try to discover now where I originally posted them, since that town is full of different points of interests and restaurants.

So far, I agree with your explanations @MortenCopenhagen , however:

  • Regarding "When promoted to also represent an area the image remains at the original pin. ":
    This is definitely not true for my photo. The place, I posted it to, shows two others of my images, but not that one! Nevertheless, if I open My contributions → Photos, it shows it under the title of the original pin, but following the link, I still cannot find it there. In fact this was not the first time, one of my photos disappeared from the place pin even though it is not hidden/blocked and continuously increases the views. However, I just found out another one of my photos appearing under the city pin, still can be seen under the original pin. In this case not a tourist attraction, but a store - possibly making a difference.

  • Reg “Pics at areas that are not linked to a real pin inside the area was uploaded illegitimately.
    This it not true! I ensure you, I did post the mentioned picture to the “real pin”, not using any other “trick” to get it to the city pin. In fact, as I found out just now, three of my originally posted seven photos made it to the city pin, whereas the place shows only two others. So, there a still two others, not marked as “problem” and having more than 100 views, which I did not find yet.

  • Reg. “The photo might have been promoted to also represent the city, city district, or country. And this is no longer the case.
    I think this is more complex. After the views were increasing by the thousands daily and then slowed down rapidly, there are still (usually less than 10) more views every day. My explanation for this: my photo is still one of the images representing the city (as explained above), but it is neither the banner nor one the pictures showing on top of the list, after clicking the banner. So, only very few users, patient enough to scroll down through many other photos, are able to see mine eventually.

P.S. I hope @MohazinCC doesn’t mind “camping on” his post, but I am convinced the discussion will help to answer the original question too :wink:

Hi @WilfriedB

Thanks for testing and reporting.

First if all I have to admit that my experiences were based on the layout prior to the introduction of the Explore tab. So the new layout under a city dies not allow me to see the photo tab where the “by me” tab is. I seem to only ge able to see individual photos and not the photo page for a city.

I remember two if my photos posted to the SMK museum. And I checked that they are still to be found under “by you” under the museum.

Obviously things have changed. I’m unable to test and adjust my conclusions for now.

Thanks

Morten

@MortenCopenhagen I forgot to mention: All I said above, applies to the desktop and I did not crosscheck (yet) on the mobile app.

@WilfriedB ,

Interesting situation. I’m going to explore some of my similar ones.

With the photos that are at issue, when you view them in your gallery, do you have the option to delete them? I have several were I can’t delete them for some reason.

@Rednewt74 reg.: “do you have the option to delete them?” is yet another issue.

Short response: Nope :disappointed_relieved:

However, on the desktop, I did find a workaround:

  1. Go to My contributionsPhotos (either by date or views). Now, depending on how long ago you did post it, you need a lot of patience, but at the end, it always worked for me (so far).
  2. First copy to clipboard or a notepad the exact name of the place where you originally posted the picture (not the city or region!).
  3. Now scroll backwards in your photos until you see the questionable one - which is easier said then done! When you think, you passed that point, use the search function of browser and search for the name you saved in the previous step. This does work for me in Firefox, but the farther you scroll back, the slower the browser (and the whole PC) becomes. Note, even if the pictures was moved to the city pin and removed from the originally place (as it happened in my case) it still shows under the name of the place where you originally posted it.
  4. At that point you can either delete it immediately or click on the place name and you see all images you ever posted to that place together with the review, if any. Here it doesn’t matter if you attached the photos to the review or posted them directly to the place*. To remove the attached photo, it is possible here to edit review, whereas the others, you can delete separately.

One more thing:

@MortenCopenhagen 's statement should be read like: " … represent the city, city district, and/or country, …"! On the search for my “lost photo” I learned, there are many photos of mine in each level of the hierarchy: city, county, state, region and even the country. The state of Bayern shows more than 200 of my photos taken in several places! But this raises another question: If we delete an image as described above, will all the copies in the hierarchies above also be deleted? I believe, they should, but who knows …?

  • Example of a place, where I attached two images to a (very short :disappointed_relieved: ) review and another one directly to the place. For directly posted pictures, you can see the number of views here:

Hi,

I will try to delete very carefully with the help of my current tab at the earliest.

Thanks for your valued response.

@MohazinCC

Simply select the one with less views and delete it.

You are violating so many rules on your photos and reviews that you are really putting your account at risk.

The most common violation that you should fix ASAP are:

  • duplicates
  • Duplicates across location
  • Redundancy (very similar photos)
  • Reviews with only a generic description of the location, not showing any personal experience of the place and totally useless

An example of the first two violation can be seen here below.

The same video was added three times, on two different places. Just keep one and delete the other two. Adding the same content on two different places can end on a permanent ban

Nine similar photos of the same place (I just took six in my screenshot). The photos are not adding any additional information, please just select one and delete the other eight.

The same applies to most of your contributions. Of course you will loose view, but the alternative is to be banned.

The next review is not telling anything about the place

Share your experience of the place or delete it.

Next one is off topic and spam, as you are reviewing a Bus Stand

More than 50 of your reviews are not publicly visible already, do you know that? And most of the others should be deleted immediately.

A review is to share your own experience of a place, the service you had, how was the feeling of the place.

Writing that the place in where it is is something that we already know, as we are using Google Maps.

Also a review is NOT a caption, like this one, also with NO photos. Are you joking?

Here you tell us tha a railway station is a railway station. Again, are you joking?

Please fix all your reviews
