Incorrect category translation in Danish: Shelter

Hi @DeniGu

I found another serious translation mistake on top of the two previous ones that are still not fixed.

GCID shelter is translated into Danish as “Herberg”.
Herberg has 2 meanings in Danish according to https://ordnet.dk/ddo/ordbog?query=herberg

One meaning is covered by
GCID hostel = Vandrehjem (in Danish)
and the other is “A shelter for hikers in the outdoors”. Such a place is more precisely named “Shelter” in Danish according to https://ordnet.dk/ddo/ordbog?query=shelter Here is one example. See the cover photo to ensure we are on the same page as to what a Shelter is. The category must have been selected with English as the App language.

So I request
GCID shelter to be translated into Danish as “Shelter” and not “Herberg” as it is now.

Since we would never use the term “Herberg” when referring to “A shelter for hikers in the outdoors”. And the “Shelter” category is really missing.

All the best
Morten

Hmm, another confusing category indeed @MortenCopenhagen . But I am not sure this category is meant to be used for such places in the outdoor.

When I look at some of the translations in other languages, I get the impression it is rather meant for a place where the homeless can go or people who are e.g. victim of domestic violence.

Morning @JanVanHaver

This is certainly also an example demonstrating how problematic it is that Google has not yet released a list of definitions explaining the intended use of each and every category.

Before I posted this I made the following research:

Google has made 5 shelter categories in the US category list:

animal_shelter Animal shelter

  • homeless_shelter Homeless shelter
  • womens_shelter Women’s shelter
  • sheltered_housing Sheltered housing
  • shelter Shelter
  • animal_shelter Animal shelter

And based on this I concluded: What kinds of shelters for humans can we come up with beyond

  • Homeless shelter
  • Women’s shelter
  • Sheltered housing

I see “Sheltered housing” as the catch-all category for other types of shelters for humans. This leaves the most general category “Shelter” category available for the “Outdoor kind of shelters for hikers”.

And finally, I could argue that the shelters for hikers in the wilderness are notoriously difficult to find, so having them on Google is indeed helpful to Maps users.

Cheers

Morten

I can echo @MortenCopenhagen s finding here as a fellow Dane. Searching for a Shelter in Denmark in Maps (the one for hikes outdoors) brings up very different categories across locations. As per the screenshot below the users (and Maps) are pretty confused what category to place outdoor shelters in.

All of the locations based on the list below should be marked as Shelters (the ones for hikes outdoors) :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @MortenCopenhagen ,

Thank you for raising this and for your detailed explanation, it’s quite helpful. I will forward your suggestion to the team to look into, and this is also a great thing to send feedback about directly in the Google Maps app.

As for the previous two categories you flagged, rest assured that they’re being worked on. However, it may take some time, so we’d greatly appreciate your patience and understanding.

Thanks a million @DeniGu

Regarding sending feedback directly from the app, I would like to share the following:

Only once was action taken based on this kind of feedback from me. So seen from my end, this is like talking to a dead tree  Honestly, I have pretty much given up on this.

It would be so much more helpful, interesting, and motivating if the team at least would send us a standard “Thanks we fixed it”-notification with a copy of the feedback we provided. This way we can slowly learn how detailed and specific our feedback needs to be to get implemented. Or even just a small green checkmark added on https://www.google.com/tools/feedback/reports would be a huge improvement.

Google Maps is so focused on us “Being helpful” and still there is only “roaring silence” when we try to be helpful.

Cheers

Morten
