If at first you don't succeed, try and try again!

I love the outdoors; the beaches, national parks…you name it. In 2015, I visited the state of Arizona for the first time. I went to see the Grand Canyon and it was spectacular. I did some research on other must-see places that aren’t too far, some of which were Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and Coyote Buttes. Say what? Coyote Buttes, as in The Wave? Oh my…I had to try to get there. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get that far. From that day forward, my eyes were set on making it to Coyote Buttes North (The Wave).

I tried for several months with the online lottery but was never successful. In April of 2018, I was in Southern Utah and not too far from the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) office where the in person lottery is held. Fun fact, while the office is in Utah, the Wave is actually in Arizona. Since I was nearby, I of course tried the in person lottery but wasn’t fortunate to get one of the 10 permits given out. Arghh!!

I was more determined than ever to get a permit to do this hike. Month after month, I paid my $5 online for the lottery, no luck. This past February, I was driving cross-country and made a stop in Kanab, Utah. It was during winter, so the lottery would be drawn on a Friday for three days of permits (Sat, Sun or Mon). “Number 41, group of 5.” Exhilaration on the opposite side of the room. They’re taking the permit, so there are only 5 permits left for that day. And so it continues. Drawings for the final day, Monday are now being held. With 4 permits left, my number was drawn. Hallelujah! :raised_hands:t5: Happy dance :dancer:t5:

It snowed the night before my hike so it was a bit more of a challenge getting to the trailhead. Hiking to the Wave is roughly a 6.5 round-trip hike, but I did 9 miles (wrong turns undoubtedly, haha). It is in the wilderness, so their are no actual trails, no restrooms, no water etc. The payoff at the end, is this marvelous, picturesque natural beauty that you’re able to enjoy away from crowds of people. I can hardly wait to do this hike again. I’m putting it out into the universe :wink:

I used some pictures of the Wave before for the front page of booklets about seismic wave theory … quite jealous you made it there.
