Iceland in winter

2 days in Iceland . 13-15/01/2023.

we arrived around 2pm on 13 jan. it’s getting dark pretty soon on Iceland in winter so we decided we will check in to the hotel in the evening . We hired the car and we started our journey.

Our first stop was Fagradalsfjall .
[Fagradalsfjall](http://Fagradalsfjall https://maps.app.goo.gl/EHiJgWddqLrsorsC8?g_st=ic)

Breathtaking place . Parking is free and from this spot you can walk to the volcano where you can see lava - if you’re lucky enough. (Or buy a trip).

The second stop was Strokkur.

[Strokkur ](http://Strokkur https://maps.app.goo.gl/hrHrJAZqRed36BMRA?g_st=ic)

Small geysers everywhere. There is a big one too and you can see it “explode” like every 5mins.

this photo was taken few minutes after 5pm.
as it was dark already we decided to go to the hotel.

We stayed at 100 Iceland Hotel in Reykjavík .

After checking in, we went for a meal.

this restaurant was pretty close to our hotel .

Hereford steikhús

[Hereford Stekhús](http://Hereford +354 511 3350 https://maps.app.goo.gl/T64P98gnF4Nzv8836?g_st=ic)

Nice restaurant . They have a menu - starter -smoked puffin, main course-whale stake and desert it was some ice cream with some kind of cream. Or you can order a pizza like me and they will bring you disgusting frozen pizza with no taste . They have more food to choose from .

After that , we decided of course to go somewhere dark to see the aurora borealis.

we were incredibly lucky. On our first night! To be honest I didn’t expect that we would actually see it. It was beautiful , colourfull dancing aurora :green_heart: .

Æsustaðarfjall

[AEsustadhafjall](http://AEsustadhafjall https://maps.app.goo.gl/AouhBdkh9DnxmfBN6?g_st=ic)

beautiful dark spot where you can watch this beauty.

After taking some photos with our mouths open, we decided to find another spot. So we followed the lights.
Skálafell SkíðasvæðI

14/01/2023

After we woke up we went to the Viking museum as it was still dark out .

Víkingaheimar

[Víkingaheimar](http://Víkingaheimar https://maps.app.goo.gl/SKhYaiZGkZi24ujM7?g_st=ic)

Nice small Viking museum . 1500 pp adult or 1300pp student . They accept Isic. You can walk on the 1:1 Viking boat and take pictures with the swords and helmets on.

After this we went for lunch and to check out the waterfalls .

First one was the Seljalandsfoss

[Seljalandsfoss](http://Seljalandsfoss https://maps.app.goo.gl/L2ntS1Vo4jSxeKFT8?g_st=ic)

This is such a beautiful place and the waterfall is huge . There are also some smaller ones. You’ll have to pay for the parking .the parking is for 2 hours . There are also some gift shop stands and food stand with coffee , tea, beer , doughnuts and muffins and soup … there are toilets .

Second one was Skógafoss

[Skógafoss](http://Skógafoss https://maps.app.goo.gl/iY1Qq4pGVLgTTpok8?g_st=ic)

Huge waterfall. Beautiful place . You’ll find many waterfalls in this area they are almost next to each other . In winter everything is frozen so we couldn’t go behind it . Parking is free.

The third one was Kvernufoss

[Kvernufoss](http://Kvernufoss https://maps.app.goo.gl/bGrb7D6bVM2FoVceA?g_st=ic)

Beautiful place and waterfall . In winter everything is frozen so be careful. You’ll need special boots to go behind the waterfall. Parking is not free and you’ll have to walk approximately 10-15min depends on the weather conditions.

It was around 5pm and it started to get pretty dark quickly.

So we fas-travelled to the black sand beach.

Víkurfjara - Black Sand Beach

this was taken 5:50pm

We came to this beach when it was already pretty dark . But it was still beautiful . Huge black sand beach .

On our way back to Reykjavík , we stopped for a meal.

The Soup Company

[The Soup Company](http://The Soup Company +354 778 6611 https://maps.app.goo.gl/HoQV6hN1RcjvFJoE7?g_st=ic)

That was the best soup ever. I had the cheddar and broccoli soup in the bread . My boyfriend ordered the red hot lava soup in the bread ( which tastes kind of like a goulash ) .The good thing is you can ask for refill if you visit on weekend if I understood that correctly. Of course we asked for refill it was so good and rich . Another good thing is you can eat the bowl :joy: very nice and cozy place . Friendly staff .

After that we went to see the aurora again. We wanted to find a different place this time. And we found it… I had no clue there is a have camp really. So I think I just have a good feeling about places  .

Aurora Basecamp

[Aurora Basecamp](http://Aurora Basecamp +354 620 9800 https://maps.app.goo.gl/AtSup473ikEn99CBA?g_st=ic)

again- beautiful .

Those photos were taken aroun 11pm.

Unfortunately our journey ends here as we had to go back to the hotel because of our early flight back home.
