Ice Fishing - Winter in the Mitten State #MichiganYearAround

Hello Local Guides from all over the world!!!

In this opportunity, I would like to introduce the reader to Ice Fishing, yes fishing on the ice during wintertime.

Please read my post regarding Winter in the Mitten State to understand more about the activities we do during this season. Since Michigan is surrounded by four big lakes fishing is part of everyone’s life not just during summer but winter as well. The month of February is usually the coldest month it’s time to go ice fishing :fishing_pole_and_fish:

Preparation for ice fishing:

First, you have to make sure the ice thickness is safe to walk or to drive your vehicle to the lake or pond. Minimum of 4 inches of solid ice to support someone’s average weight, minimum 5 inches to ride a snowmobile, 8-12 inches is needed for normal passenger vehicle, and 12-15 inches is needed to safely drive a truck according to the Department of Natural Resources also, to know if the ice is thick enough to fish on, listen to the weather channel for ice report, look at the lake if you see people fishing, or do it yourself by inserting a tape measure into the hole hook the end into the edge of the ice.

Second, make sure to check the weather for the day, how cold the temperature is, see if it will be sunshine or cloudy, how strong the winds remember if the temperature is 30F with 10 miles of wind it will bring the temperature down to 20F. This is very important info you need to be ready for the day’s adventure. Temperature conversation 32F = 0C.

Check this video to see people pulling a shanty or pop-up shanty with ATV into the lake.

Third, is the Ice Fishing equipment: fishing pole, ice cleat for the shoes, auger to cut the hole in the ice, ice shanty if you have one, chairs to sit down, bait to put on the hook to catch the fish, a bucket to keep the fish, the net, and don’t forget to bring your hot chocolate or hot coffee in the thermos maybe some sandwiches or whatever you like to have for a meal. You also can bring your small grill for your hotdogs :slightly_smiling_face:

An Ice Shanty is a small shed built on skies or runners to be pulled out over the ice so ice fishermen can sit inside to be out of the wind and fish through the hole in the floor.

Bamm … you are now ready for ice fishing. Set up your ice shanty, cut the hole using an auger, put the bait on the hook, and drop it down into the hole, the rest is just your patience.

I used to go ice fishing with my late father-in-law and my husband. Growing up on Borneo Island I could say I am a good fisher-woman  . We left home early in the morning bringing our supplies and hot coffee and sandwiches made by my mother-in-law. Since my Father-in-law passed away 4 years ago we have not gone out ice fishing, but I hope to do it again one day soon! It feels like it is not complete without my father-in-law around, missed his complaining about me out fishing him.

Below are some sweet memories of our ice fishing photos … it put tears in my eyes when I looked back at these photos  :sob:

After seeing the photos above you may wonder why we used the cat litter bucket to sit on, besides being the chair it also can function as storage … kill two birds with one stone

Stay warm and happy ice fishing!

Nice article with impressive photos…

Oh… Happy to note that your late father in law, your husband and you are interested in ice fishing.

Though I’m a pure vegetarian, I used go for fishing - for a change… Surely, it used to be exciting…

Thanks for sharing your experience, dear @Erna_LaBeau .

Accessibility aspect noted. :+1:

Menarik sekali.

So nice, I would like to try once but not sure how long I can last in such extreme weather ( even I love Winter and do not feel cold too much) @Erna_LaBeau let’s try someday.

Cacing biasanya dipake buat mancing pas summer kalo winter pake ikan kecil2.kalo orang sini bilangnya minos.

Makasih dah baca postinganku ya! @iorikun301

Terima kasih undangannya, Bu @Erna_LaBeau . Mudah mudahan suatu saat saya bisa beneran bisa mancing di es.

Tapi ternyata di Amerika juga ada cacing, ya? Kirain itu kebiasaan yang cuma ada di Indonesia. Hahaa…

I lived at St Catarines, Ontario for two years and the ice was impressive there, especially when the wind blew and piled it up high on the shore of Lake Ontario. Also the ice bridge which forms in the winter at Niagara Falls was spectacular!

Which lake do you go ice fishing on @Erna_LaBeau ?

We use to go to Breast Bay, Lake Erie many fishermen were there check this VIDEO

These photos were taken on Lake Huron how pretty it is when the wind and wave keep pushing ice to the shore.

How did you like St? Catherine, Ontario? @Dave26

This looks impressive, @Erna_LaBeau , even if there are places close to here where the temperature easily drops usually down to -10 °C, reaching also - 25 °C (well, I am going to buy a house in there). But we have no lakes to go ice fishing (not enough ice, or no fish).

Personally, I don’t have a fisherman’s attitude, so I admire those who can stand there waiting for hours, especially in the middle of the ice.

During the winter an ice bridge forms …

The last time the ice bridge was strong enough to walk on from Canada to the USA was in 1912

Wow thanks for the 1912 photo of Niagara Falls seemed like not too much different nowadays.

In 2017 we took a.trip.to Nova Scotia, PEI, and explore Cabot Trail. Took the Canadian side on the way there and across to Maine on the way back. Have you been to those area? @Dave26

Hi @Erna_LaBeau

This looks like a really fun family activity. I zoomed into the map and was not sure if this place is near Detroit? It looks like somewhere in the upper peninsula. By the way, have you ever heard of the Holy Transfiguration Skete Society Of St. John? They make their own jams made from Thimbleberry.

The jams are rare and highly priced for its flavor and health benefits.

Hi @Erna_LaBeau I did go fishing with my son on Lake Simcoe Ontario, we walked out pulling the sled with equipment and pop up Cabin. I really enjoyed spending some quality time with my son, We caught 8 perch , threw them all back in and had a great time. Trudging back in was another story, Bitter bitter cold wind made it very hard to walk, Exhausted we finally made it back in, Cold but happy

Ice was over a foot thick and water so clear we could see the fish nibbling our lines. All in all got to spend some quality time with my son,

What a nice setup @TerryPG I like your tent very much and look at that perch they are lucky if me they will end up in my frying pan what did you use for the bait? Minos?

Haha yes the end part when you have to trudge things back to the shore is the hard part!!! Glad you had a wonderful quality time with your son that simple moment like that would stay in everyone’s mind forever.

I really appreciate your sharing your experience with us … Stay warm!!!

No it was not in UP it was on Breast Bay Lake Erie just off from Monroe city @user_not_found

I checked the Holy Transfiguration Skete Society Of St. John oh gosh I never knew about this place and the funny thing it is not too far from Jacob Falls I have been to this waterfall. If you keep going to the end of this peninsula it will take you to Copper Harbor I love this place.

And no I never tried the thimble berry jam I will keep it in mind!
