Icarus

(the sky from 35,000 feet)

The story of Daedalus and Icarus is that of a father and son. Icarus’s story is a myth that portrays the saying “better safe than sorry”. To many it represents obedience and adherence to instruction.

Icarus flew too high up and fell from the sky because of the heat from the sun despite his father, Daedalus’s warnings.

But they left a part out, a part that could cause an uprising and a possible rebellion. They didn’t tell us Icarus could also face an impending doom if he flew too close down because the ocean current has the power to sweep him under.

Google local guide represented to me what Daedalus was to Icarus. Becoming a local guide gave me wings to fly.

(me in Seychelles and my wings)

Growing up I was an introvert who had imaginary friends. They say it’s okay to listen to voices but it’s starts to get weird when you talk back in response.

I had built a perfect world of my own deep in my imagination, a place of solitude i escape to, my mind was my sanctuary. Over a period I became a lucid dreamer, the ability of the subconscious to be aware of a dream state with certain level of control over the dream.

At a point I developed psychic abilities, I would imagine scenarios in my head of unlikely events. Little did I know that they all would come to past as time went on.

Being a local guide brought me out of my shell.

I found a reason to go out more, explore and see the world around me.

As the last born of the family, I had to take permission from my parents before going out. You’d think at 23 they’d allow me,but no. They were scared I would fly close to the sun but little did they know that I needed to fly to see how high I can go.

(me and my sisters outdoors)

Because of their protective nature, I was only allowed to go out with the company of either of my two sisters.

I could not drive but I still I took the car out making them believe I could, I have rammed into walls and trees. My sisters were always with me on those drives around the city, for some reason they didn’t seem too care about their life. At the time, even I wouldn’t get into the car with me if i was driving.

They saw the dedication in me towards achieving my goal and I guess to them that was worth risking their life for.

Occasionally I would return the car back home with dents and scratches and my parents would go off but my sisters always covered up saying it was the fault of the other driver.

One day I guess they found a purpose of theirs and realized their life mattered after all, they didn’t get in the car with me. So I kidnapped my nephew, well he nodded when I asked him to come with after waving biscuits and sweets at him.

(me and my nephew the day I kidnapped him with his consent)

Thinking back I don’t think he nodded to what I thought, anyway I brought him back home in one piece and in my defense he had the seatbelt on the whole journey.

Being an uncle comes with a lot of responsibilities one of which is ensuring you don’t harm the people you are meant to protect and I knew I was good a driver enough at the time to avoid any accidents.

Being a local guide on google has helped me break boundaries, I am a better driver, i social socialize now, I have grown in confidence and I have come to realize that with great power comes great responsibility.

(the new me)

When those numbers come in from google about my monthly stats it gives me a sense of achievement and fulfillment knowing I am making a difference in my own way.
