When I first knew about local guides it was from my Gmail where I saw lots of mails telling me what I thought about some places I went (some I didn't even visited) and ask me to write reviews. I was kinda hooked aha. The turning moment was when I created an address for an hotel (hôtel Montmartre) which just opened up. I realized then how important it was for local guides to review with justice all the places you can find in each city cause basically everybody use Google. I then started to review as many establishment I visited as possible.. And I hope I helped some people to make a good decision and have a nice trip in my city.
