Hi @Trail_blazer , Sacrificing 3.5 million views for the cleanup was a high price. The discussions in the comments are insightful. Thank you for sharing the takeaway.
I agree with you @AdamGT , this is a better way to clean up the irrelevant photos.
@Trail_blazer I’ve read your further reply but can only reiterate what I said before
I’ve outlined what I believe is a far better and safer cleansing strategy but it’s up to you.
@Trail_blazer @AdamGT In my experience, a cautious cleaning strategy leads to the same problem we have at home or in the office. Reluctance to discard junk.
I’ve often looked at non-performing photos and hesitated to delete them for various reasons. The result is that I now have 6 year old photos with less than 1000 views, a situation that would not be tolerated by @TerryPG
@tony_b Earlier I tanked lots of photos with less than 20 views then 50 views but nothing much happened. But then we didn’t have this new view algo so it didn’t affect much.
Remember Tony “to each his own” pick your numbers by all means.
The T100 thinks or maybe not differently,
B4 I was involved, I didn’t care less,
now is different, for example I will never reach
a level 9 LG as not a priority to me, that said
I hope my contributions are revelant to GM
service users, I started out correcting
locations it brought me wrongly to,
you were doing you @Trail_blazer so tell
us your dreams as a LG & what is
especially important to you as a LG,
in answer I will do me as I have always done
the same,
any school pictures I have are now in the
triangle of ( not allowed ) on Maps maybe a
Irish thingy, keep up your good work
Peadar
Sure we all have to pick numbers of relevance to us, but I often remember your various thresholds in relation to time, and you had a time frame in which your photo should reach 1000 votes.
In an effort to roll out my new round of deletion, I discovered a few minutes ago that a photo I took 5 years ago is only at 1842 views. Further checking revealed it is no longer listed under the relevant POI. Actually, there are no photos at all under that POI now. Perhaps there are others like this, and they stopped getting views years ago unknown to me.
That’s what irks me there are tens of photos with missing POIs, some have good views some don’t and I always had the strong urge of deleting them but I have so many photos that I can’t even tell if they are growing or not. Maybe for you or wilfrid it’s possible. Kind of a lighter OCD freakness takes over me
No. You have 10,000, Terry has 9,000, and Wilfried has 7,000 photos. Not much difference between the three of you. I only have 1,000 and I can’t tell if mine are growing either. I only monitor the top 100 which in my case is from 2,100,000 down to 40,000 views. I was monitoring all videos, but now the list is getting longer, i’ve instituted a cutoff point of 500 views.
It is impossible to monitor all, and I don’t know the status of any that fall outside of that range.
@tony_b i deleted 1000 photos browsing through possibly 3000-4000 photos
I’m not good at programming otherwise its not difficult to write a program to sort photos by views and divide it by the date uploaded it will highlight highly performing photos in mind. I would try the same method for star photos in top100lg tracking if it were possible for me to write a code script.
Good morning @tony_b and @Trail_blazer,I just cannot resist to comment :
It is not impossible to track all, but I still need to scroll manually through all my 7,407 photos on Maps every morning, which takes 10 minutes, so probably not more than 15 minutes for 10,000.
However, besides some programming skills, there was a lot of preparation necessary beforehand to extent my database, which I maintain for all my photos (independently of Google Maps) since more than 10 years.
But it was and is worth it! Being able to compare all posted photos is really reveals a lot.
Yes, I’m aware that some LGs have scrolling apps, as well as scripts or programs for collating the information. I haven’t done that, and the current system is quite tedious when I try to maintain a twice per month schedule of monitoring.
Maybe you should write a post on Connect with the necessary instructions to set this up.
Hi @WilfriedB, @tony_b & @Trail_blazer
excuse my ignorance, why not @Annaelisa
& @AdamGT
When I mentioned triangle above:
Lots of my photos are accumulating them,
Do any of ye guys have this triangle, & if
so who organises them, maps itself or other
LG’s, my job is ongoing & I’d like to add more,
I’m not overly concerned but if not valid I think not fair as none
of the 4 pics I think break the rules,
your opinion I’ll appreciate
P
No, I don’t, but from what I’ve read, it is an indication of something wrong. Were those photos posted as part of a review, or just photos alone?
I don’t see anything wrong with the photos, but something might be wrong with your account. If you’re under scrutiny for some reason, then anything you post might be blocked.
You should click on the blue links and see where they take you. I’m no authority on blocked accounts or blocked content, but I’m tagging @ErmesT here for better guidance.
@Peadar That personally didn’t happen to me. Doesn’t look very serious but what I noticed is that you have some 1400 media contributions (1387 photos + 11 videos)
Out of which only 1311 media is visible and only 1245 photos are visible so there are some 150ish media hidden. They did get some views but now seem hidden maybe violating some policies I’m not sure but the triangles you see on the media are not visible to others so it might be an indication of hidden or un-suitability. Let’s see what Ermes has to say.
Hello @Peadar
this is quite simple:
Those photos were hidden by the AI filter and it shows an object located in the European Union (EU). If the filter rejects photos taken in other parts of the world, we don’t get any notification, for EU it is law.
Note, the filter not only checks for obeying the rules, but also for suspected SPAM and false information. Clicking the triangle sometimes, but not always gives you the chance to submit an appeal (would be a link in your last screenshot). If not, my recommendation is to delete the photos - specially if there are many, as @Trail_blazer pointed out. However, about a year ago, I had several of those suddenly appearing after being online for months. After escalating it here via a Google moderator, it was solved for all of those at once. This might also be worth a try.
CC @tony_b
Interesting, not that easy to contribute via photos in EU i guess
@WilfriedB
No the opposite, @Trail_blazer:
The filter works worldwide and hides media without our knowledge. For photos taken in EU we do get this information - for others, we don’t know anything.
I was to say that to @Peadar that how come these photos have views and the triangle both at the same time ? It means they media was valid for some time then they went hidden if this update rolls to everyone i guess it will be way better specially for the type chaos i faced here
maybe I would have not have faced this.
